But thank you for your generosity. Let's jump into this week's message called I Have Decided.
56 All right. Go there in your Bible. Luke chapter 13. We're studying. We're marching through the book of Luke, and we are in chapter number 13. I'm going to give you the title of my message, and then we're going to read. We're going to read two stories in chapter 13, and then we're going to read two stories in chapter 14. Before we read, let me just tell you what all four of these readings have to do with the common thread. we're going to talk about decisions today. Write down the title of today's message. It's called, I Have Decided. I Have Decided. And I love this because God did not make you a robot. God is not interested in controlling you. God does not force you to do things. But God is the master of invitation.
50 So he invites you into his kingdom. He invites you into becoming a follower. He invites you into his world, but he will not force you or manipulate you or make you do anything. I just love this because in the Bible, God says in the Old Testament, I set before you life and death, blessing and cursing, laker or clipper. Then he goes like this, choose wisely. In other words, what he's trying to say is the choice is yours. You've got to make a decision. You've got a choice to make. Then we're going to look today at four stories here in the Gospels, in the Gospel of Luke, where we're going to have to make a decision. Watch here, our first story, chapter 13, verse number 6. Then he told this parable. Let me pause there. Whenever Jesus spoke, he always told stories. He spoke in stories.
44 Why? Because stories are windows into what he's really trying to teach us. So the story is is got nuance and flavor of what god is trying to say to us Then he told this story a man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard And he went to look for fruit on it, but he didn't find no fruit So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard for three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and I have found none of it cut it down Why should it use up the soil? Sir, the man replied, leave it alone for one more year and I'll dig around it. I'll fertilize it. And if it bears fruit next year, fine. If not, then cut it down. Write down point number one today. Fruit follows repentance.
37 Man, do I love this. What Jesus is trying to teach us. He's not trying to teach us about fruit. He's trying to teach us about root. See, most of us, we get so caught up in the fruit of things that you miss out on the root of things. He tells a story. He says, this guy was walking by. First year, he's like, wow, that's weird. Got no fruit. Second year, he walks by. He's like, wow, interesting. A tree, no fruit. Third year, he walks by. He said, man, I've been walking by this tree for three years. And for three years, I see no fruit. He said, cut down the tree and get rid of this thing. It's bearing no fruit. The master, the landowner says, hold on. Hold up. I get it. No fruit. Give me one year. You know what this is representation of? God is trying to teach us about how patient and merciful God really is. See, you and I, when we don't bear fruit, by the way, Jesus said, it is the Father's will that you bear much fruit.
37 So God wants there to be fruit from your life. What is fruit from your life? It is results. See, we don't serve the God. behavior modification we serve the God of life transformation and when God gets a hold of your life he will produce in you what's lacking right now oh come on everybody clap and thank God there's some fruit from my life I always think this about fruit. Fruit speaks. Fruit tells on itself. And what is the fruit, the fruit of the Spirit? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, self-control, Laker Nation. That is the fruit of the Spirit. Let me like that. But he walked by, he said, no fruit. He said, this life has no fruit. There's no fruit. He said, what did he say? Give me one more year. Give me one more year. Anybody thankful that when you were messed up and had no fruit, God stepped in and gave you one more year?
35 Come on, clap like God gave you some mercy in your life. Put it on the screen. Mercy is not receiving the punishment you deserve. Mercy is God's loving compassion that moves him to forgive us, help us, spare us from judgment. I know everybody wants grace. Oh, we live in a grace era. Grace, blessing, grace, favor. I'm grateful for the grace of God, but church, don't get it twisted. I'm thankful for the mercy of God. I'm grateful that he didn't give me what I deserve I deserve punishment I deserve to be cut off I deserve to be cast out But anybody thankful that the Bible says he is slow to anger And he is rich in mercy Somebody give him a praise today I'm thankful for the mercy of God And he said, I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
29 I am going to get down this next year. I'm going to fertilize this thing. I'm going to get down. And that's an amen right there in child language. Praise the Lord. That's an amen. And so I'm going to get down into the fertilization. I'm going to get down into the soil. See, I want to tell you that your life is not about your exterior. Your life is always about your interior. It is not about the clothes that you wear, the car that you drive, or the place that you sleep. and it's about the heart that you keep. He said, I got to get down to the soil of this heart. I got to get down to the repenting thing of this heart. Oh, I'm telling you, I love every single Thursday we get together and pray all church prayer. Clap for all church prayer. Do I love all church prayer?
09 And it is an hour of power. It is one hour in this room praying and seeking God. And you want to know what I do for an hour during prayer? For an hour during prayer, most of the hour looks like me repenting. and turning away from anything that would cause God to not be pleased with my life. I repent for my attitude. I repent for my thinking. I repent for any words that didn't please you. I'm telling you, it starts with repentance. If you want fruit in your life, get down to the soil of your life and get your heart to be right with God. Somebody clap and say amen.
47 So the first thing that he teaches us is it's not about chasing fruit, but it's always about getting down to the what? The root. And fruit will follow repentance. So what is the key takeaway of the whole story? The character and the nature of God, he's merciful. The character and nature of us, we are wicked and we need to repent from our sins. So then he continues on and he continues to teach in verse 31 and he says this. At this point, some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you. Now, let me just pause there. I know you have some haters. I know you've got some people that don't like you. I know there's one person that left a weird comment on your Instagram, but you ain't got nobody that hates you like that. Read it again. At this time, the Pharisees came to Jesus and said, man, get out of here. Go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you. He replied, go tell that fox, pause.
49 If you don't think Jesus was gangster, you ain't read the Bible. He didn't go, oh, no. Here it's mad. What shall I do? I've got to go into hiding. He said, oh yeah? Well, you go tell that fox. I just, I want to call someone a fox this week.
15 I just want to look at somebody and be like, fox? That's so gangster. I haven't used it in forever. You go tell that fox. I will keep on driving out demons. I'm going to keep on healing people today and tomorrow. and on the third day I will reach my goal. What's he talking about the third day? The third day when he rose from the grave and got up from the tomb. Clap if you believe that Jesus is alive. Come on, hallelujah. He said, verse 33, in any case, I must press on today and I must press on tomorrow and the next day for surely no prophet can die outside of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you. How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you shout, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Write down point number two today. You can resist or you can repent.
24 He cries out two times, Jerusalem, Jerusalem. Notice the contrast of Jerusalem versus Bethany. We started this year off, Zoe, in 2026, we started the year off saying, let's make Zoe a Bethany. A Bethany place, a city called Bethany. Bethany is where he loved to go. Bethany is where he was honored. Bethany was where he was celebrated. Bethany is where he did his best stuff. He is contrasting Bethany to Jerusalem. Jerusalem that kills the prophets. Jerusalem that is unwilling. He says, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I've tried to gather you together like a hen that tried to gather her chicks, but you were unwilling. See, I just like that word there, willing, because at the end of the day, God is gonna invite you.
23 God is gonna call your name God is gonna ask you and invite you to be with him But you can resist him or you can turn to him. I don't know about you But for me in my house, we're gonna run to the presence of God. We're gonna be willing to serve and a willing to say yes Every start of the year, every start of the school year. So we, at Zoe, we fast and pray for 21 days at the start of the year in January and the start of the school year in August. So in January and August, we fast and pray for 21 days. So mark your calendars in August. We are going to be back to fasting and praying for 21 days. Anybody believe today in prayer and fasting?
07 Come on. So, a few years ago when we started to do this in the church when the boys were really young, we used to do these Wednesday night prayer meetings during Fast and Prayer. We're actually bringing them back this August. We'll pray all three Wednesday nights. And so we rented this church because we didn't own a building back then, but we do now. I like it's your boy.
29 And so we rented this church and we drove there as a family and we told all our boys, okay, boys, we're going to go in for prayer. And we want you guys, you're not going to go to Zoe Kids tonight. You're going to come in and pray with us. And we're going to be inside with the big church for prayer. And one of our kids looked at us and said, no, I'm not.
51 And I was like, well, maybe he didn't hear me. So I gave the same speech again. I said, so, you know, we're fasting and praying right now as a church, and it's really important that we pray together as a family. I want our whole family to be in here. It's an hour of power, just one hour, and we're going to go into the church together, and we're going to pray. And then he said the same thing. And I thought he was going to die. and we started to argue with our our child have you ever tried to argue with a child jokes on me and he refused this young man refused to come into the prayer meeting and so pastor julia and i we were just distraught we were discouraged we thought this is a spiritual attack The enemy is attacking our family. And we're fasting and praying, and now this kid does not want to be in the prayer meeting.
46 This is the devil. And so we fastened and prayed harder, and we thought, this is spiritual resistance. And now that this young man is older, I recognize that there was not spiritual at all. That's just the way this kid was made. That's just his mother's genes running through his body. Her side of the family, not mine. but I just watched this kid resist it's like I'm not gonna go I'm not I just and even today sometimes with our boys I can watch them resist what we're trying to teach you gotta make a decision for your life are you gonna resist God or are you gonna run to God are you gonna fight God your whole life going I don't wanna say yes I don't wanna give over my life I don't want to tithe. I don't want to serve. I don't want to do it your way.
38 You can resist God or you can run to God. I'm too old to run from God. I've decided to run to God. Anybody else? Oh, come on, everybody. South Bay, clap with us. This is my prayer. God, give me a willing spirit. Psalm 51, verse 12, restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, I've wanted to gather you. Do you know how many times God has wanted to set you free? Do you know how many times God has wanted to restore your brokenness? Do you know how many times God has wanted to give you freedom? Do you know how many times God has wanted to gather, but you were not willing to come into his presence? I'm telling you, God grant us at Zoe a willing spirit to do your will. Oh, come on, clap if you believe it today. That's our prayer.
30 Restore unto me. Put it on the screen again. Restore to me the joy of being saved and grant me, give to me a willing spirit. You know what a willing spirit looks like? Put this on the screen. This is what it looks like. When God convicts us, calls us, invites us, you have two options. Resist him or repent to him. Ask God to give you a willing spirit that says, I trust you. I want what you want and use me however you choose. That's what willingness looks like. Willingness looks like I trust in your plan over my plan. I want what you want more than what I want. Use me however you choose.
16 Don't let me resist you and fight you and run from you. Grant me a willing spirit. We were with a friend recently, and he said that someone in his life paid him a huge compliment and said that he has, this person that he respects, said, you have such a submissive spirit. What a compliment. You're easy to submit to God. Some of us, God would have to put you in the belly of a whale for three nights. You know what I love about God? He'll do whatever he has to do for his agenda to be accomplished. It's not because he's mad at you. It's because he's madly in love with you. Thank God for his mercy and forgiveness and grace. Come on, clap if you're grateful for another year.
12 So it continues on, and now he's teaching us in chapter 14. Chapter 14, read with me on the screen. It says, when one of those sat at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God. Jesus replied, a certain man, so he's telling a story again. So watch this. He's telling another story.
37 Jesus' story this time says, a certain man was preparing a great banquet, and invited many guests. Raise your hand if you love to eat free food. I trust your Costco members. At the time of the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, come, for everything is now ready. But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, I just bought a field and I must go see it. Please excuse me. Another said, I just bought five oxen and I'm on the way to try them out. Please excuse me. Still another, I just got married, so I can't come. Please excuse me. And the servant came back and reported this to the master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, go out quickly into the streets, into the alleys of the town, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.
37 Sir, the servant said, what you have ordered has been done, but there's still even more room. Then the master told his servant, go out to the roads, the country lanes, compel them to come in so that my house may be full. I tell you not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my Banquet write down point number three today quit making excuses Quit making excuses. I don't know if you've noticed yet, but you are a master of excuses. You actually have a master's degree in excuses. Anybody like myself, you are great with excuses. Come on, lift your hand. We make excuses about everything. Notice that every excuse was not bad. it just wasn't right. Every excuse was a good excuse. One said, I just bought a field. I got to go take care of it. That's a good thing. Someone said, I got married. I got to go on my honeymoon.
40 That's a good thing. Someone said, I bought new oxen and I got to go take care of it. That's a good thing. It's not that we're choosing bad things. It's that we're saying no to the better thing. and I find so many people God is shouting at you I've invited you into my kingdom I've invited you to the banqueting table I've invited you to a party like no other and we keep making excuses God I'm not good enough God I'm not ready God I've got issues God I'm working on my career God I don't have enough money I say that we quit making excuses and we start following Jesus with all of our heart all of our soul all of our mind and all of our strength. Somebody say amen. So the question becomes for you and I, the question becomes for you and I, is what are you going to do with heaven's invitation?
37 So this story happens pre-paperless post. If he could have sent it digitally, he would have, so he sent his servant. And I don't know how you are with RSVP, but I'm not skilled in the area of RSVP. A few years ago, someone said, Pastor Julie and I invite to their 30th birthday party. Now, let me just say this. You can miss a birthday party if they're turning 43. Weird year. Well, every time someone hits a decade, you better show up. 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, come on, somebody say amen. So it's their 30th birthday party. Now, I don't have a bad heart. I'm just not skilled in this area. And these people's problem was they sent it to me, not to Pastor Julia. That's where they messed up.
32 I can't take the blame. I'm just telling you what happened. So I got the email, I clicked the link, I saw who was invited. I looked at the date and the time. Then I threw it away. Because I'm a man. And ladies, we're not wired that way, okay? We go on hikes. So I'll never forget, it was the night of the party, at the hour that the party was starting that I realized it's our dear friend's 30th birthday party starting right now. That was the hour that I notified my wife we are supposed to be at their birthday party right now. She said, how long have you known this? I said, well, since I got the invite. She said, when do you get the invite? I said, two months ago. that they've got to buy it by two months ago I said, what are we going to do? I said, well, they're going to think that we're the worst people in the whole world.
29 But we can't show up an hour late because it's a long ways away where the party is. So let's just pray and beg God for mercy. Do you realize how long heaven has been inviting you into the kingdom of God? It's not like you lost the invite. It's not like you didn't think you were invited. God has been shouting into your ear, I love you. I'm for you. I'm with you. I want you. Come sit at the banqueting table. Come on, everybody. thank God today that you've been invited to something you didn't deserve to get the invite to. And my prayer, my prayer for all of us is that we quit making excuses. Stop with all the excuses. I can't give because I don't have enough money.
22 Maybe you don't have enough money because you're not giving. No, quit making excuses about why you can't do this for God and do that for God. It would be too expensive if we didn't live together. It would be too much money. It would cost me too much time. No, when I get to heaven, I will not be able to present my excuses. I will only get to show the work that I was able to do for God on the earth and the yes that I gave to God every single day of my life. Come on, clap if that's how you want to show up in heaven. Come on. Come on. So I know that you are a master of excuses of why you didn't reply to a paperless post. But when it comes to the king of the world, when it comes to the one that died on the cross for our sins, I just say for us, let's quit making excuses. Oh, I love this. Put it on the screen. People don't drift into purpose.
14 They drift into excuses. You don't drift into living a life for God. You don't drift into picking up your cross daily. You don't drift into serving the Lord. You drift slowly in making excuses. We're not going to make it this week. We're not going to give this month. We're not going to help this time. We're not going to be there. And the moment you start drifting into a life of excuses, you're going to drift away from the banqueting table. Put up this next one. It's not that God is unwanted. It's that something seems greater or more urgent.
45 You notice that all of them were like, I would love to be there. I would love to be there Sounds great It's just like, hey I just got married I just bought this new oxen Have you seen the oxen lately? So, something greater, something more urgent took the place of the king of the universe. These are not bad things. They're just not as good of things. And notice how Jesus is contrasting. He is seeing this not as you choosing something else. He is portraying this as you rejecting his invite. See, what made me so sad that night that I let Julia know it's seven and we're supposed to be there right now, what made me feel so bad is I felt like I was rejecting my friends.
45 I never want to make my friends feel rejected. I never want them to get online and go, it says he opened it. It says that he read it, but he never RSVP'd. That signals rejection. may God never feel rejected by us Jerusalem, Jerusalem I've tried to gather you but you were unwilling that's rejection I don't know about you but God grant me a willing spirit so I can serve you and follow you all the days of my life Here's the last one. This is my favorite one out of all of them. Luke 14, verse 25. Large crowds were traveling with Jesus and turning to them, he said, if anyone comes to me and does not hate their father and their mother, their wife and the children, their brothers and sisters, yes, even their own life, such a person cannot be my disciple. Now let me just pause there.
37 If you think that Jesus is teaching us to hate our mom and dad, you're kidding yourself. That's not what he's saying. It's not what he's saying, because there might be some teenagers that are like, yeah, yeah. It's not what he's saying. It's not what he's saying. It's not what he's saying. It's all through the Bible. The Bible teaches us. First commandment with a promise. What is it? Honor your father and mother, and if you do that, you'll live a long life. So my dad used to say to my sister, who was very mouthy, if you want to live a short life, keep talking like this. That was his words, not mine.
08 Honor your father and mother. It's the first commandment with a promise, attached to promise. So God is not saying that we should hate our family. What is Jesus really saying here? Jesus is saying that our loyalty to him should even be more loyal than our loyalty to our own family. He is saying that I am second to no one in your life. Not even your brother, your sister, your mother, or your father. I am the priority of your world.
36 Unapologetically. And he says in the second part of it, and if anybody wants to do this, Yes, even their own life, such a person cannot be my disciple. Verse 27, and whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone is going to see this and ridicule you, saying this person began to build, but they weren't able to finish it. Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won't he first sit down and consider whether he is able with 10,000 men to oppose the one coming against him with 20,000? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything, you have.
36 You cannot be my disciple. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? Write down the last point today. Count the cost. Count the cost. He's saying name somebody who goes to build something, and before you build it, you consider how much this is going to cost. Come on. We live in L.A. We count the cost every day. We count the, we live in a world We're always trying to calculate How much is this going, how much is this going to cost Come on, this summer I'm just telling you parents You're not going to find a better deal For the summer camps, the outside of Zoe summer camp Come on clap, for our kids camp It's the best deal around, I know Because I'm trying to find the camps My son wanted to go to one of the camps For sports, and I looked at the price I was like, you're crazy I will never pay that I could take our family to Italy and back for that you crazy we count the cost all the time we live in a world we are always trying to calculate in fact Julia is so sweet she put together for us this summer a summer budget an excel summer budget of what the summer is going to cost us she asked me she goes do you want to see it I said no you think I want to go to bed crying no Just pay that Amex. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you for your due diligence. But no.
10 Every time you pump gas in LA, you count the cost. He said, what kind of a guy goes to build a house and doesn't consider how much this is going to cost? Every single Sunday, worship team, come join me. Every single Sunday, I drive from the South Bay and I go up to the Highland Park and I'll tell you every Sunday when I'm on the 110 and I drive past Staples Arena because it's not called crypto, it's called Staples Arena and I pass, I feel the anointing, I feel the Holy Ghost. And every time we drive through downtown and every time we're driving through, I see this building that started to be built in 2016. They started to build these towers, but they ran out of money, 46 floors. They ran out of money in 2019 and they stopped building them. In 2024, some graffiti artists got a hold of them and now they're known as the graffiti towers.
13 And every Sunday I'll walk, I mean, I drive by, I look over at the towers and I think They couldn't complete the project. They started the construction. They didn't finish the construction. Jesus is trying to say, I don't want your life to look like the graffiti towers. I want you to start and say, okay, if I follow Jesus, it's going to cost me everything.
45 It will cost me reputation. It will cost me comfort. It will cost me talent. It will cost me time. It's going to cost me everything. Am I in? And he's saying, don't come in. Don't say yes. Don't give me your yes until you count the cost. Count the cost of how much it's going to be to be my disciple. Because if you cannot pick up your cross every single day and follow me, you are not fit. You are not worthy to be called my disciple. So consider the cost. Have you talked about the cost recently? Have you prayed about the cost? Because it's going to cost you to forgive them. It's going to cost for you to surrender some stuff. It's going to cost for you to get up a little bit early in the morning. It's going to cost you to read a book. It's going to cost you to get into a small group. It's going to cost you to show up at serve day. It's going to cost you to give your time, your talent, your treasure, and your life to God. Because this is the life he's invited us into. So, Jesus doesn't pull any punches.
42 Jesus, not like, I'm going to get you in to the banquet, and then I'm going to change the terms and the agreements, and you're going to sign the contract and be like, you try to sneak this in? You're crazy. You think I wasn't going to read through the, no, Jesus is like, here's the contract. If you want to sign it, great. If not, I get it. You're giving me your whole life. Just a heads up I gave you my whole life And I had to count the cost too When he was in the garden of Gethsemane And he's praying And his sweat turns into blood And he's saying I don't want to do this I don't want to do this You know what he's doing? He's counting the cost It's going to cost me It's going to cost me It's going to cost me I'm just praying for you listen God is so good God is so great he does not manipulate it is not course it is not force it does not bully the only invites And he invites you to follow.
54 He invites you to serve. I was thinking as we get ready for this message, I have decided. Key moments in your life where you've got to make a decision. I have decided to follow Jesus. I remember being 16 years old, making the decision all the way in, making a choice. I'm going to follow God. I've decided.
22 And then from there on, it's just kind of been daily, getting up, repenting, not resisting, saying yes to his invite, following God with all that I got. Now, I was thinking about this guy in our church. you wouldn't know him South Bay or Highland Park because he goes to West Adams.
45 He's a 6 p.m.er. And you can't miss him because he's 6'7". We don't got a lot of 6'7 people around. Someone in our church invited him to come on Easter Sunday last year. And on Easter Sunday he heard the good news of Jesus. He heard the gospel message. and in that service on Easter Sunday a year ago he raised his hand and gave his life over to God come on clap for my friend you got saved Then I watched him. I met him that day, but I just watched him. And he'd show up, show up, show up, show up. Can't miss a guy that's 6'7 in the church. I'm just telling you. So I'd be in worship. Alligator arms.
36 Look over, 6'7. Next week, alligator arms, 6'7. He just kept showing up. He kept showing up. And he kept showing up. Finally one day after church I said, you know, you should start serving. You ever thought about serving? He said, I'll serve. So he starts serving every Sunday, serving every Sunday. A couple weeks ago he told me, I'm leading my first connect group. I'm a connect group leader now. So what kind of connect group you got? Volleyball. I said, well, good. Because you play for the U.S. Olympic volleyball team, you should teach us how to play volleyball. I just love his story and watching this guy, man. I'm telling you, I used to be alligator arms like this. Now I'm alligator arms like this because he's next to me. And I watch this guy just make a decision every single week, every single day. I have decided to follow Jesus.
37 Come on, clap if you believe it today. I said before you, life and death. Choose. Choose you this day who you will serve. Choose you today who you will serve. Would it be the gods of them or the God that was, is, and is to come? And I just love you've been invited by heaven to the banqueting table. Stop resisting God. Start running to God. Come on, stand to your feet. Come on, let's pray together as a church. Again, thank you so much for listening to this week's message. We pray it brought you great strength, great encouragement, and brought you closer to God. Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out on any of the messages that come out from our church. But we'll see you next week as we continue on the Jesus Road.
