44 Well, welcome to Calvary Church. Did you bring a Bible with you? That's smart, you were thinking. um before we get into the study uh today just an announcement that we are planning a tour to israel next year in 2027 um i've been putting kind of putting that off because you know stuff going on over there but it looks right now like there's a window and so we are going to do a tour i've been asked by so many people for so long there's a waiting list of so many people who have been inquiring. So we are going to do that in April of 2027. You can get information about that on our website. And Inspiration Cruises is the outfit that is helping us put this on. You can get it on their website as well, eventually at least. But we're going to pray right now for our time together. And I underline the word together. You have decided to come to church. You're here not watching this online. You could be at home watching it online, but you decided that there's value in leaving your home and getting together with other believers to have the same common experience of worship and word together. And there is something powerful that happens when that happens. The Bible promises that. So let's pray and ask God to do what he wants. Father, we are putting ourselves before you as living sacrifices. We're giving you our time. We're giving you our attention. We're giving you our thoughts. We are purposely not going to be distracted with texts, et cetera. We are tuning into you. And we pray like young Samuel prayed that you would speak and that we would hear and we would understand. And we would not only be hearers of the word, but we would become doers of the word as well. Use us not only individually, but together as a team, as a group, as a congregation in this community to bring your
51 light in Jesus name. Amen. One of my favorite stories for a long time has been the story about the preacher who was selling a horse. And because the horse belonged to a preacher, he trained it a little bit differently. And when he was selling his horse to another guy who was interested, preacher said, look, this horse is trained a little bit different. So it will not respond to the typical commands. If you want the horse to go, do not say giddy up or, or kiss, whatever. You need to say, praise the Lord. If you just say those words, the horse will go forward. If you want to stop the horse, you don't go, whoa, you just say, amen. That's how this horse responds. I've trained to praise the Lord. Go. Amen. It stopped. So the guy paid the preacher the money walking or trotting, taking the little horse on a trot out in the fields, taking it home when suddenly a jackrabbit ran in front of the horse, spooked the horse, and the horse just took off into an open gallop, which freaked the guy out on the horse. And he just forgot the instructions.
58 so he's trying hard whoa whoa whoa the horse keeps going going going whoa whoa nothing nothing then it dawns on him what the preacher said so he said amen and the horse dug his hoofs in and came to a screeching halt just before a 200 foot drop into a river and the guy's horse is panting and he goes, praise the Lord. Now, that may be the only wrong time to say the words, praise the Lord. All other times, it's right to say that. I bring that up because I actually had a hard time saying those words. I remember distinctly as a young believer, I knew people who would say, praise the Lord. And it just seemed weird to me, contrived. They were always saying it just sounded odd to me. And I just didn't, I couldn't do that. And I actually remember the place and the time that I first said the words, praise the Lord. And I meant it from my heart. I remember what I was doing. I remember where I was going and I said the words. And when I did, it was like a victory for me. I kind of felt like I'm becoming a fruitful believer. And I discovered that verbal praise is indeed fruit. It says in Hebrews 13, we should offer the sacrifices of praise to God. That is the fruit of our lips. However, we also know that just saying the right things isn't enough. It's not enough to just get excited about something. We've been reading a parable, the parable of the soils and the sower and the seed, where there were some who had great excitement
06 with no commitment. John Stott wrote these words, the Christian should resemble a fruit tree, not a Christmas tree. For the gaudy decorations of a Christmas tree are only tied on, whereas fruit grows on a fruit tree. You may recall that Jesus talked about fruit bearing in John chapter 15, and he said, abide in me and you will bring forth much fruit. Now, we have been reading in Mark chapter four, where you are turning now or have turned Mark chapter four, we're, we've been reading about that parable in the first 20 verses that we did for a couple of weeks, about four different soils, four different hearts. And the first heart listened, but rejected the truth immediately. That's the heart and soil. The second type of heart was somebody who expressed superficial excitement, but that didn't last very long because they were shallow in their commitment.
16 The third were people who were distracted over many competing interests, and that's the weed infested soil. But then the fourth type was the good soil, and the good soil was very productive. The roots went down, and it was very abundant in the harvest that it produced. Now, as we continue on, Jesus will expand on that fourth type of soil, the receptive heart soil, fruitful believers, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear forth fruit, as he said in verse 20.
56 Now, that begs the question, what exactly is a fruitful follower, a fruitful believer? It simply means he is or she is productive. Their life is producing something. It's growing to the point of productivity. And the Bible actually uses the term fruit to speak of several different things. Here's a few of them. It sometimes speaks of fruit as spiritual character. That's Galatians 5. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, gentleness, self-control, etc. That's spiritual character. also the bible speaks of fruit as being holy character holy living romans chapter 6 you have been set free from sin and you have your fruit unto holiness then as i mentioned just a few moments ago verbal praise is also seen as fruit hebrews 13 offer the sacrifice of praise that is the fruit of our lips. And then sometimes financial giving is considered fruitfulness.
07 When Paul took an offering of the Gentile churches to bring to the church in Jerusalem in Romans 15, he said, I have sealed them to this fruit. And the fruit he was speaking about was the finances that he collected from the Gentile church. but here in mark chapter 4 fruit primarily speaks of spiritual reproduction spiritual reproduction it's where the seed once planted in that good soil germinates grows produces fruit and in the fruit is seed so that plant can keep going. Some 30, some 60, some a hundredfold. It is where the seed replicates itself through the fruit. So then the fruitfulness Jesus is speaking about here is bringing others into the kingdom, bringing others into the kingdom of God, bringing others to salvation, winning people to Christ. And so what I'd like to do as we continue on beginning in verse 21 down to verse 34 or thereabouts, I want to give you four features of fruit bearing believers. These are four characteristics of fruit bearing. Now this whole teaching of Jesus is based in an agrarian culture, an agricultural culture.
39 the culture of planting and sowing seeds where the farmer goes out every day, comes back, goes home, lights a lamp for his family, beds down with his family, gets up the next day, goes out, and he does it again. That's what it's soaked in. So let me give you the first feature. Fruit bearing is noticeable. Fruit bearing is noticeable. We begin in verse 21. Also, he said to them, is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret, but that it should come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear. Now you'll notice there's a little change of metaphor here. We go from planting seeds in a field. He'll get back to that in a moment, by the way. But he goes into the home where it's dark at night. And the context, however, is the same. In a Jewish home 2,000 years ago at night, this was the most noticeable feature. I actually happened to have a replica of a first century oil lamp. This is the size of it. It was a clay, terracotta clay, flat saucer-like jar. And there's a wick in it and oil was simply placed in it and the wick was lit.
09 The wick would be saturated and it would provide evening light for the home. To maximize the effectiveness of this, the lamp would be lifted to a very high shelf, usually on the wall of the home. And that little lamp or a few of them would radiate through that room and drive the shadows away. People didn't light this to cover it up. That would defeat the entire purpose. The purpose of lighting a lamp is to reveal something and to drive the shadow away. So here's the point that Jesus is making to these apostles, to these fruitful believers of his. The apostles were like a lamp designed to shed light into the darkness, to drive out the shadows, to give guidance to people. You'll notice in verse 23, if anyone has ears to hear. He has said that before. Let him hear. The more truth you hear, the better equipped you will become to share with others. That's why truth is so important. That's why truth is so important. Now you're going to remember something. I'm going to tie this together. Back in verse 11 and 12, Jesus, when he was asked about parables, he said, look, to you, it has been given to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outside, it is not given that seeing they may see and not perceive that hearing they may hear and not understand.
49 So I'm giving stories to both reveal the truth to you who want to hear more and to conceal the truth from those who really have no interest at all. This is going to be a riddle to them. so the parables were given to both reveal and conceal that is for Jesus he is going to the cross and he has a timetable as he goes to the cross and so the reason he is sort of entering into this storytelling method from this point on is because he knows the people want to trap him in order to find fault against him in order to put him to death so Jesus will both reveal but also conceal the truth. However, in the great commission, Jesus will say, you go into all the world and you preach the gospel. You are not to conceal anything. You are to fully reveal the plain truth of the gospel. You are to elevate the lamp for people in darkness to show them the way out. So receivers of the truth must become transmitters of the truth. The truth has gone into your life. It's produced fruit, some 30, some 60, some a hundred. Now it's your turn.
12 You who have received the truth become transmitters. You've heard it. You've listened to it. You've understood it. You've been transformed by it. Now lift your lamp, shine your light. that's exactly the same thing jesus said in the sermon on the mount he said this you are the light of the world a city set upon a hill cannot be hid nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lamp stand and it gives light to all who are in the house so let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven. So that's what he is saying is that fruit bearing is noticeable. You are to make it plain. You are to make the announcement clear. You are to reveal. Now you might say, well, then what's the point of verse 22? There's nothing hidden which shall not be revealed or anything kept secret, but that it should come to light.
14 well in the first parable remember he talked about seed that was sown on rocky soil and seed that was sown on weed infested soil so that at first both of those soils look good they're growing stuff but the real nature of them is hidden at first eventually however it's going to be revealed and it will be revealed to these fake believers on judgment day when Jesus will say, depart from me, I never knew you. And their house will come crashing down. As Jesus said, great will be the fall of that house. So back to this main point, if the life of God is in you, then the light of God will shine through you. If there is spiritual life inside of you, then you will shine your light so others can get out of their darkness. The easiest way you can tell if somebody is on good soil is they lift the lamp. They're always lifting the lamp. They want to get people out of darkness. They want to share the truth with other people. I have an article that I have had for a few years. It's from the New York times. And, uh, it was about the renovation of the Washington monument in DC, like 20 years ago, they've done a few of them, but on this particular renovation, they found graffiti inside in the lobby under the marble wainscoting from 1800s, somewhere in the 1800s. And the graffiti said this, whoever is the human instrument under God in the conversion of one soul erects a monument to his own memory more lofty and more enduring than this one. Somebody got it right. I know you've been looking at the Washington Monument in the 250th anniversary of our nation. It's awesome to see it lit up, but leading a soul
24 to Christ is much better than that. Light the lamp and lift it high. Don't let the best news ever become the best kept secret ever. Announce it. that means all of us. You say, well, you're the preacher.
47 Yes, but think of me more as the equipper. there was a man who drove his car from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Tampa. And on either side of the car for miles were just thousands of orange trees, grove mile after mile after mile, just millions of oranges all around him loaded with fruit. He stopped at a little restaurant in the midst of that. And he ordered breakfast. He ordered bacon, eggs, pancakes. And what did he order to drink orange juice. And the waiter said, I'm sorry, we don't have orange juice. The machine is broken. Think of the irony of that statement. There are millions of oranges all around. There are oranges in the kitchen. There's orange slices as garnish on the breakfast plates, but they had become so dependent on the machine. They couldn't get orange juice. Don't become dependent on the machine.
55 Become somebody who just lifts the lamp. Be noticeable. Fruit bearing is noticeable. The second feature is that fruit bearing is consequential. Verse 24, then he said to them take heed what you hear with the same measure you use it will be measured to you and to you who hear more will be given for whoever has to him more will be given whoever does not have even what he has will be taken away from him now we're back to the agricultural metaphor. And when a farmer was planting seed, he would go to his barrel of seed. He would take a measure. He'd have a seed sack around his shoulder. He'd put a measure of seed in his measure and put it in the sack. Now at harvest time, after planting, the farmer can expect to get back from the fields only what he has put into the fields. He had taken out seed in a measure. He's dispersed it through the fields. When it comes time for harvest, he can expect only what he has put into it. That's a biblical principle, right? Whatever you reap is what you sow. You sow what you reap, or you reap what you have sown. So if you sow, plant, disperse the seed, diligently, generously, you'll get a bumper crop. 30, 60, and 100 fold in this case.
34 If you're lazy and you're indifferent, the results are going to be very, very minimal. That's what Paul said, 2 Corinthians 9, he who sows sparingly will reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will reap bountifully. So what is the consequence of a fruitful life? what is a consequence what are the results of a fruitful life I'll give you two words people and prizes the consequence of a fruitful life are people and prizes what do I mean I mean people that you influence or people that you lead to Christ or people that you water the seed that has been planted in their life. And then you will get prizes. When you see God, he'll reward you for that. People and prizes. Those are the consequences of a fruitful life. People and prizes. More souls and God will reward. Let me give you scripture on that. Here's the one for people, more souls.
37 First Thessalonians 2, Paul writes, for what is our hope, our joy, our crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of the Lord Jesus at his coming. Seeing you in heaven with us, with him, and knowing that we played a part in that, that's awesome. People. But then also prizes. You'll get rewarded. Second Timothy four, last letter Paul ever wrote. He said, I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. And finally, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge will give me on that day. And not only to me, but also all those who have loved his appearing. So fruitfulness is consequential. You get on one hand, the reward of seeing people that you have influenced led to Christ, et cetera.
37 And you will get a reward from God himself for being faithful with the opportunities he has presented to you. And get this. According to Paul the Apostle, even those people who partner with those who share the gospel will get a reward in heaven. Paul said that to the Philippian church. Remember he was writing to the Philippians and he said, you know, no other church has shared with me in giving and receiving except you only. You have sponsored me. You have supported my ministry financially. And then he writes this, listen carefully. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. Now that is insightful. And he is actually giving us insight into how God keeps his account books in heaven because when he writes that it abounds to your account those are financial terms and it indicates the interest accrued on the credit side of the ledger where the books are kept so what paul is saying is that he would go out and preach the gospel the philippian church has paid for his mission and sponsored him and so they're also going to get credit for it in heaven. So that's a good principle that God will tally up fruit from ministry and market to your credit. Let me tell you what that means. Practically, you're going to go to heaven one day.
17 I hope. Okay. So when you're in heaven, do you know people are going to be walking up to you, introducing themselves and saying, thank you. And you'll go, I have no idea who you are. I've never met you before in my life. They're going to say, I was led to Christ because you sponsored that missionary or that evangelistic event from that church or that radio broadcast or that YouTube broadcast or TV broadcast. You helped sponsor that. It was so fruitful. I gave my life to Christ and it wouldn't be possible without your gift. Now, this also means something else to me because he talks about fruit to your account. Fruitfulness has consequences. It means to me that I should be very careful as to where I invest my ministry money. I should be very, very careful where I invest my ministry money. That is, I should be asking, is this ministry that's asking me for money producing fruit. If they're not producing fruit, I want nothing to do with it. That's not how a lot of people get. They go, well, this ministry is going to fall and cave in and they're really struggling. And I need to give because they're struggling.
33 I want nothing to do with it unless they're bearing fruit. It's called ROI, return on investment. That's just smart business sense. Jesus said, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. That's how we ought to be thinking. Is the ministry producing fruit? Back in the early 1900s, George Truitt, he was a pastor in Dallas. He went over to, he was invited to dinner at an oilman's mansion in the Dallas Fort Worth area. There were lots of fields and oil derricks and man took him up to the top level of his house. And he said, I own everything in that direction. I own everything in that direction. I owe everything in that direction. I know I own everything in that direction. and the pastor said, yeah, but how much do you own in that direction? Lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven. Fruit bearing should be and is consequential.
38 So it's noticeable and it's consequential. And just a quick note, because you may have a question about verse 25, for whoever has to him, more will be given. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away. What on earth does that mean? Well, let me give that same truth to you in Luke's rendering of this same section of scripture. Luke chapter eight, Jesus said, whoever does not have even what he seems to have will be taken away. I think what Jesus is referring to are those fake believers in the previous parable, those on the shallow soil the rocky soil and those on the weed infested soil they claimed to have life but there was no fruit so even what they seem to have will be taken away so fruit bearing is noticeable it's consequential third fruit bearing is eventual you don't see it always right away. Got to give it time. Verse 26. And he said, the kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground and should sleep by night and rise by day. And the seed should sprout and grow. He himself does not know how. For the earth yields crops by itself. First the blade, then the head. And after that, the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle because the harvest has come. That's a pretty good description of farming, isn't it? That's how farming works. Farming is hard work and it takes enormous patience, a lot of patience. And there's a mystery to it because the farmer plants the seed, he cannot make it grow. He can do his best. He can water it. He can add fertilizer to it, but he can't actually make it grow. And if you remember, even in the first parable, how much of the farmer's work in that field was unproductive? Do you remember? 75%
47 was unproductive. They got the same kind of seed, but 25% was like uber productive. 3,000, 6,000 and 10,000% increase in yield. So it's eventual. Now the picture here is of a farmer who does his work, plants the seed and he waits and he waits. And eventually, eventually and entirely without his direct involvement, the seed comes up and produces life. In the spiritual realm, new life is not your responsibility I'm hoping that as you hear this, you'll go, just a little bit.
47 New life is not your responsibility. New life, new spiritual life, spiritual reproduction is not the result of your wise arguments. It's not the result of incredible preaching, your brilliant apologetics. It's the work of the Holy Spirit. You just plant the seed. You plant the seed and there's enough life in the seed and potential in the soil that God can bring incredible results. It is God's work. Now we have a part in it, but it's God's work. And I, my friend Franklin Graham preaches around the world and he preaches the very simple straight up gospel. And he always says, I don't get it. I honestly don't understand it, but all I know is there is built in Holy Spirit filled power in the simple preaching of the gospel. Just planting the seed and letting God take it has incredible results. Paul said that in Romans 1, I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God to salvation. Of course, he uses human messengers.
01 That's the point in verse 29. The farmer puts in the sickle, so he has a part in it, plants the seed, and he puts in the sickle, but it is God that makes it grow. 1 Corinthians 3, I planted the seed in your hearts. Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. And the results may not be suddenly, not immediate, but eventual, eventual. Give it time. Walk away. Let it grow. See what God does with it. Don't fret it. Not your responsibility. Plant the seed. Walk away. Galatians 6, Paul said, in due season, you will reap if you faint not. Now there's a larger point before I close this out with the last one. Bearing fruit is natural. It's just part of the process. It's the normal result of planting seeds. As I said, there's enough life in the seed itself, in the DNA of the seed and potential in the soil. If the soil is good and receptive for life to happen, the seed of truth planted in an open heart will produce spiritual results the Associated Press put out a release some time ago. I cut it out and kept it. It was done by an agricultural school in Iowa. And this is what they said. This is what they wrote.
36 100 bushels of corn from one acre requires 4 million pounds of water, 6,800 pounds of oxygen, 5,200 pounds of carbon, 160 pounds of nitrogen, 125 pounds of potassium, 75 pounds of yellow sulfur, and other elements. In addition to these things, which no man can produce,
01 rain and sunshine at the right time are critical. It was estimated that only 5% of the produce of a farm can be attributed to the efforts of man. Farmer didn't make the sun. Farmer didn't put those elements in the earth. God did. God did. So that's why seeds never sweat. They never worry. I don't know if I'm going to ever come out to anything. No, you just plant the seed, walk away, let it grow, and then share in the harvest and get a reward later on. That's a good deal.
48 The fourth feature of fruit bearing is that fruit bearing is exponential. And that's the last little illustration in verse 30. Then he said, to what shall we like in the kingdom of God? or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed, same motif, agricultural agrarian stuff. It's like a mustard seed, which when it is sown in the ground is smaller than all the seeds on earth. But when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs and shoots out large branches so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade. and with many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it but without a parable he did not speak to them and when they were alone he explained all things to his disciples in this last little analogy there's two basic parts first part is the encouragement second part is the warning the encouragement and this is why i think he used this illustration is to bolster the faith of these disciples of his. He is going to tell them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The enterprise that they are a part of has very, very small beginnings. And the kingdom of God is going to grow exponentially in size and influence.
18 Now the mustard seed, notice that Jesus said it's the smallest seed. This kind of bothers a lot of people. See, the Bible isn't accurate because Jesus said it's the smallest seed. Okay. There are smaller seeds in the world. Begonia seeds, poppy seeds, a few others are fine as dust, but this is the smallest seed a first century farmer planted in his garden, put in his earth. That is the point. And this was a common proverbial expression of something very tiny becoming something enormous. A mustard seed tree can grow to about 15 feet tall. What Jesus wants them to know is they are part of a successful enterprise that cannot fail. Do you understand that about the church? It cannot fail. Everybody has these warnings.
15 The church is going under. It's going to fail. It cannot fail. Jesus said, I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. He wants them to be encouraged by that. I've often said we are part of the greatest company in the world. That's the church. Our product works universally. We have offices worldwide. Benefits are outstanding. And the retirement package is out of this world. but it all started as a tiny seed very very tiny thing think of it Jesus was born in a stable laid in a manger grew up in a hick town called Nazareth his first followers were just 12 not very well educated and not the brightest bulb in the package type of guys 12 of them later on the first church was only 120 people in an upper room in jerusalem another 500 in galilee that jesus appeared to after the resurrection then peter preaches on pentecost and it grows to 3 000 more and then another 5 000 and then pretty soon in the book of acts it is so exponentially large that the bible just said multitudes were added then more multitude. They just couldn't even count them. And eventually the gospel would spread around the world so that when we get to the very end of time in heaven, in the book of Revelation chapter four and five, the picture is the redeemed out of every tribe, tongue, people, and nation.
57 enormous the church has grown and blessed the world planting church buildings and hospitals and relief organizations and eventually in the kingdom age jesus and the church will rule and reign over the entire earth for a thousand years all from little humble beginnings a tiny seed So that's the encouragement. You guys are on the right team because this little thing is going to be enormous. But then there's a warning because Jesus doesn't just say, you know, it's like a mustard seed that's real small and then it gets real big. He adds a detail that you shouldn't miss. He says, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade. Do you remember in the very first parable of the sower that the birds were satan snatching the seed so if you want to be consistent in your interpretation of scripture and you should be should want to be this is the sign that this thing is going to grow so big that there's going to be some birds that come along and infest the branches. I'll give you another text to mull over Revelation 18. Babylon the great has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, a cage for every unclean and hated bird. Birds are often seen as evil or picture as evil in scripture. So again, this, this enterprise is going to grow and grow. And this huge growth is going to become an opportunity for Satan to join it.
47 so back to the 12 apostles there was a Judas in that group back to the first church in Jerusalem there was an Ananias and Sapphira in that group back to the church of Corinth there were people Paul called ministers of Satan who were part of that group and even in the first parable there was the rocky ground and the weed infested ground and those represented people who were there and they looked like there was growth and looked like there was life but they were fakes they were fakes so fruitful believers understand that there's going to be some rotten fruit as well there's going to be people who claim to be christians but they will hold all sorts of weird, apparent views or deconstruct their faith and their Christians in name only.
50 They are people who will say, praise the Lord. That's the fruit of their lips. That is not the fruit of their life. So you're on the right team. You're on the right side. and I'm guessing you're in the right soil.
14 Now do the right thing. Let your light shine. Lift the lamp. Spread the seed. Father, thank you for the opportunity we have to lift our lamp of truth so high, to be saturated with truths, filled with the Holy Spirit, burning brightly for your glory, letting other people hear other people see their way out of darkness thank you lord that we have a part in it and thank you that we're going to be rewarded by you in heaven for the little bit that we do just putting in the sickle even though the growth has happened apart from much of our involvement it really is your work it is a spiritual work thank you that we get to be a part of it. And if by chance you are here and you have heard truth a long time, the seed has been sown in your life and it's just sort of bounced off because your heart was hard.
16 It could be that you're here at a place where you're ready to receive and you really authentically mean it. Then just open your heart by saying a simple prayer. Say, Lord, I give you my life. say that under your breath or say it out loud Lord I give you my life I know that I'm a sinner forgive me I believe in Jesus that he died for me that he shed his blood for me and that he rose again I turn from my sin I turn to Jesus as my Savior I want to follow him as my Lord it's in Jesus name I pray Amen
