Now I remember these verses absolutely torturing me as a young believer. Maybe you guys remember the same. That when it says there, and you know that he was manifested to take away our sins, but then it says whoever abides in him does not sin, and you immediately begin to think, wait a second, I see myself. I know that I still sin. What is that about? David Guzik is very helpful here. Let me read this quote. David Guzik says this. It is very important to understand what the Bible means and what it does not mean when it says does not sin. …
… Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin. Whoever abides in him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen him nor known him. little children let no one deceive you he who practices righteousness is righteous just as he is righteous he who sins is of the devil for the devil has sinned from the beginning for this purpose the son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for his seed remains in him. And he cannot sin because he's been born of God. In this, the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest. Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. and so God we ask that as we now consider your word which is high we esteem it we honor it we tremble before God we're not going to flippantly oh well what do we think we want to acknowledge God what we've just read is your eternal word and so now in this moment God this precious gift of the present as we have the opportunity and the honor to think about your word to let it frame how we view the world. …
Sin is lawlessness. You know that He appeared in order to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin. No one who abides in Him sins. No one who sins has seen Him or known Him. Little children, make sure no one deceives you. The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who practices sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this, the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious. Anyone who doesn't practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who doesn't love his brother." Wow. If you don't practice the righteousness laid out by God in His Word and show love for others, if you're a hater and you're vicious and you're vengeful and you're destructive and you're lawless, you're a child of the devil. …
… 1 John 3, listen to what he says in verse 5. He says, you know that he appeared in order to take away sins and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning. No one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning. For God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he's been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil. Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. do you see what he's saying there he says when you're born of god his seed enters into you and because he lives inside of you you can't keep sinning because it's just like my children they can't stop looking like me i'm in them my dna is in them in the same way god here is saying whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil. And whoever has the God's seat abiding inside of him. Again, it's about what's inside. Man, church has become this thing where everyone needs an accountability group. And if …
Man, that's intense. You see what the Bible says? He says, if God's seed abides in you, you cannot keep sinning. See, just like when the Holy Spirit comes into you, you have this affection for Jesus. Like, inside of you, you don't need someone to talk you into prayer. Please, please, just pray for two minutes a day. Just try it. Just read the Bible for three minutes a day. Come on, just do it. You don't need that inside of you. You're screaming, Abba Father, I've got to have more of you. I've got to have more of you. This is the one thing I want is just to be with you. And in the same way, He says if the seed abides in you, you can't keep sinning. Like you don't have to, someone doesn't have to beg you, please, please, End that sexual relationship. Stop that pornography. Why? Because God's Spirit is already saying that to you. And he says it so clearly. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil. …
