… So Eli told Samuel, go and lie down. And if he calls you, say, speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there calling as at the other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel said, speak, for your servant is listening. Eli challenges Samuel to step out of what was comfortable, of what he knew, and say, I'm here and I'm ready to hear from you, God. And God speaks to him. And when he does that, Samuel finally heard God speaking to him. And it starts this ripple effect, this chain of events that changed history forever. Samuel goes on to be a significant part of our Christian history as the last judge of Israel, anointing a shepherd boy who would eventually be King David, Samuel was kind of a big deal. But what would have happened if Samuel didn't have Eli as a mentor? If Samuel didn't have someone he could go to, Eli's willingness to pause, to listen, and to share his wisdom, it shifted how Samuel engaged with God. …

… him a third time, and Eli said, That's not me. That's God. Next time he speaks, say, Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening." 1 Samuel 3.10, six decades earlier than the passage I read you, the Lord came and stood there calling as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. Go to verse 19, please. The Bible says the Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel's words fall to the ground. From Dan to Beersheba all Israel recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. Verse 21. The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word. through his word. You have his word. The word of the Lord says, 1 Samuel 3, verse 10, And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant hears. Isn't that a cool scripture? And the Lord came. How many want the Lord to come today? How many want the Lord to come today into your home? How many want the Lord to come today into your emotions? How many want the Lord to come. And the Lord came and stood calling as at other times, Samuel, Samuel, and Samuel said, speak for your servant hears. And today I want to talk to you. Here's my subject about all those times you didn't see. All those times you didn't see. Father, open your word that we might behold your wonder and your glory, and perhaps show us something today that would be so specific that we would not miss your presence in this moment. We thank you for being God in every season of our life, and I thank you now for the right now word that you are going to speak. …

But listening is both not just passive, but it is actively experiencing God communicating with us. And to do that, there is an attitude involved. It's not just an attitude, but an attitude is involved. It's an attitude and an activity. So first of all, let's begin with the word expectantly. If I'm going to listen to God, I must come to Him expectantly. I must expect Him to speak to me, call unto me, and I will answer thee and show thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not. …
