… Here it comes, verse 10. And to wait for his son from heaven whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, here it comes, who delivers us from the, what? Wrath to come. Mark it in your notes. The word wrath in the Greek language is not the word for hell. It's not hell. Jesus didn't, look, he's talking to the believers who have already been saved. He gives them verse 10 and he tells them, I've got a really great infusion of hope for you. I'm blessed by you. I'm blessed by your witness, church. That is, you are waiting for his son from heaven. What son? The one he raised from the dead, the one and only Jesus, who delivers us from the indignation, wrath, judgment, the vengeance. The word mean all that. That little word wrath means all of those things. God's vengeance, God's wrath, God's judgment. Again, it's not referring to hell. That's a different word. It's referring to the day that God will pour out his anger upon a Christ-rejecting world. …
… I'm almost done. But in 1 Thessalonians chapter 1 and verse 10, it says, that's why we eagerly await for the Son from heaven. Even Jesus, whom he raised from the dead. Listen to these beautiful words, who delivered us from the wrath to come. What's that? That's the great tribulation. when did he deliver us and why would he deliver us because he took our wrath on the cross that's why the cross ought to move you because he took our punishment he took our judgment he took our sins and on the cross that's why they so beat him that he looked like a bloody mess he was torn to pieces like a plowed field. He took the sins of the world. He took our judgment and he says, I have not appointed you to wrath. I've appointed you to glory. I've appointed you to heaven. I've appointed you to eternal life. I said eternal life. calm down, just calm down. First Thessalonians 5 says that when they cry peace and safety, then comes, next verse, then comes sudden destruction. …
… So you'll notice in chapter 1, verse 10, the last verse of chapter 1, to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. Then notice the end of chapter 2, verse 19. For what is our hope or joy or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? Mentioned again. At the end of chapter 3, verse 13. that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. In chapter 4, a good chunk of it deals with that, but just notice in verse 17, then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord. and then chapter 5 I had to find the verse verse 23 now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely may your whole spirit soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ this frequent mentioning of the coming of Jesus Christ and the idea that they were waiting for him to arrive at seemingly any moment. …
… You turned, past tense, to God from idols. to serve, present tense, the living and true God, verse 10, and to wait for his son from heaven, future tense, past, present, future. There are the three tenses of the Christian life. To wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come. Now, I think this ties in beautifully with verse 3 of chapter 1, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope. faith looks back to a crucified Savior. Love looks up to a crown Savior. Hope looks forward to a coming Savior. Faith, hope, love. Past, present, future. Verse 9, 10, past, present, future. You turn from God, past, work of faith, to serve the living and true God, labor of love, present tense, to wait for his son from heaven, patience of hope, future tense, to wait for his son from heaven whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. Now, there's an implication in that last verse, and that is of the imminent, spelled with an I, the soon, the upcoming, the imminent return of Jesus Christ for the church. …
… He's turning us forward. to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus. Now watch this last phrase, who delivers us from the wrath to come. And here's what you'll discover. We finished a chapter. So I know I didn't do it all justice, and we'll go back and get a few seed thoughts as we get into chapter two. But I want to finish chapter one, so at least on the archive it'll read. 1 Thessalonians chapter 1. We did it. he rescued us from wrath in two ways. Eternal wrath, hell, judgment. You'll never face the judgment of God. You'll stand at the judgment seat of Christ for a reward, but the judgment of God for your sins is past, right? It says in the gospel of John, you believe in Jesus Christ. You've gone from death into life and you will not go through the judgment. Those are the words of Christ. he saves you from eternal wrath but I also believe what Paul is hinting at and we'll develop it in this book and the next book is the wrath that God is going to pour out on the earth in the great tribulation period the believer will be exempt from that wrath you will not go through that tribulation period. I know there's different beliefs on that. I respect everybody's right to be wrong. That's fine. But I believe the Bible clearly states, and I want to present the case for God, doesn't mean in the world you will have, you in the world, Jesus said, you will have …
… and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and the true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised up from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. Well, we want to talk to you a little bit about the gospel ministry, serving the Lord. Now, preaching is more than words, but it includes words. And I want to talk to you young men about how to have power in the pulpit. and I speak not only to them, but I speak to every man on our staff, including the man standing behind the pulpit. I speak also to all of our teachers and all of the leaders and all of the witnesses in our church. Now look first of all, and I want you to think of the content of Paul's preaching. Notice in verse 5, for he says, For our gospel came not unto you in word only, However, it means that it did come in word. …
