1 Thessalonians 5
Skip Heitzig, 2026-04-08

… Now he closes the letter, and now may the God of peace himself sanctify you, set you apart, make you holy. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming, there it is again, the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now would you notice in verse 23 the order of those three? Spirit, soul, and body. That's not how we would say it. We usually say body, soul, and spirit. Right? That's because you and I were fallen creatures. that's the effect of sin and a fallen world according to God the spirit is to be uppermost that part that communicates with God and then the soul your conscience your emotion your will and then your body which houses your soul and your spirit now I don't want to get too deep into the weeds, there is an in-house debate as to is man a bipartite being or a tripartite being, a bipartite soul and body, because sometimes soul and spirit are synonyms for one another. …

… Thus we shall always be with the Lord. and then chapter 5 I had to find the verse verse 23 now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely may your whole spirit soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ this frequent mentioning of the coming of Jesus Christ and the idea that they were waiting for him to arrive at seemingly any moment. Now, again, I just mentioned that Paul had only been in Thessalonica a few weeks, three Sabbath days, less than a month he preached there. He may have been there longer, but not much longer. We know he preached three consecutive Sabbath days in a local synagogue. it could be that he then went somewhere else for a period of time, but he wasn't there long. …

… and what he wants to do in you. Paul said, it's recorded in 1 Thessalonians 5, verse 23, he said this, May God himself, what kind of God is he? The God of peace. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. What does it mean to be sanctified? Well, when you're forgiven by Jesus, you're justified. That means your sins are forgiven. The theology term is like, it's just as if I'd never sinned. You're made new, you're justified. Sanctification though is the process over time where the Holy Spirit starts to renew you. You're not just say, but you're becoming like Jesus. Paul says, may God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you, how? through and through. May your whole, then watch what he says, spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless. Remember, our God is a triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He created us in his image. We are triune beings, spirit, soul, and body. May the God of peace sanctify you through and through. …

ministering to the whole man, to the whole man. First Thessalonians chapter 5 and verse 23, and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Sitting in your seat is spirit, soul, and body. That's the whole person. Now the spirit is that spiritual part of your nature that makes you different from animals and enables you to worship God and know God. For God is a spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Your soul is the emotional, volitional part of you, mind, emotion, and will. That's your soul. That's your sense of humor, your personality, your intelligence, your likes, your dislikes. That's what makes you, you, and me, me, that we have a soul, a psyche. That's the emotional part of us. And then we have a body. Our bodies are not evil. We're to present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is our reasonable service. …
