Christian – Is That You ?
Jack Hibbs, 2026-07-29

… not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as others do, but let us watch and be sober. Sober. This word sober means spiritually vigilant. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. Here it is, verse nine. for God did not appoint us to wrath. That's a rapture verse, folks. But to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Wait a minute. I thought we had salvation already. We do. But when is your salvation consummated? When is it finalized? When you meet Jesus, it's all done. The total, absolute salvation. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing." The world should look at the judgment to come with sheer panic. We look at it with hope, because we're not destined for wrath, but for obtaining salvation. How do we know that? Because Christ died for us so that we would live together with Him. …

Barbara Brown Taylor, 2011-11-16 · Scripture reading

For if you are with us, then nothing else matters. And if you are not with us, then nothing else matters. Be with us, we pray in the name of your beloved. Amen. Please be seated. If you came here this morning in any doubt about what season it is, this morning's gospel lesson was your clue. As any longtime churchgoer can attest, when the parable of the talents shows up in church, it's stewardship season. It's time to consider how much God has given you so you can decide how much to give back. Not only so places like this will be here next time you want to come, but also because it is good for you to let go of some of what you have on a regular basis. Now that's the kind of thing you're likely to hear at Duke Chapel, but visit a church in my part of the world and you may hear something more persuasive, persuasive, like, don't give until it hurts, give until it feels good, aim to double God's investment in you so you don't wind up like servant number three, not just wicked and lazy, but worthless, unworthy of any response from the master, save the effort it takes to order him thrown into the dark, while servants number one and two enter into the joy of their master. Dig deep. …
