… unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. That is quite a list to describe what some people will be like. Unholy, heartless, brutal, lovers of pleasure, reckless, treacherous, and right in the middle, disobedient to their parents. That's how strongly even the New Testament considers this sin. You might ask the very natural question, are there limits to obeying our parents and are there limits to what parents can require of their children?" Yes, to both questions, authority can be abused. The antidote to bad authority is not no authority but good authority. We know from Acts chapter 5 that if any authority should require of us what God forbids or forbid from us what God requires, then we say with the apostles, it is right for us to obey God rather than man. And Jesus himself understood this, especially in that ancient culture where there was a much stronger emphasis on loyalty and respect for your parents. I know this is very anachronistic and maybe not the best way to read back into the New Testament, but it gives you a picture maybe if you've seen Fiddler on the Roof, the sort of authority that the father, though it was, you know, in that musical, a playful kind of authority. But what a serious thing it was to go against your father's wishes. …
… not lovers of the good. They will be treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. And here's the worst part, if that's not bad enough. They'll have a form of godliness, but they'll deny its power, have nothing to do with such people. In the last days, notice that people will be lovers of self, thinking that that's the way to where they want to go. They'll have a form of godliness. In other words, they'll look right, but they won't have the power of God. And we're going to see why in just a moment. So three things about it not being about you. Are we having a good time so far? Awesome. Number one, God wants to encourage you today to embrace that you are dearly loved and prized by God. So this is not a, hey, sit down and shut up because nobody cares about you message. This message is radically freeing because this message is telling us what we really, really want to hear. And that is that we are dearly loved and prized by God. …
… Traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Here's the kick. Having a form of godliness but denying its power from such people turn away. They look like believers but when you're not looking at them that's who they really are. And then there's a quote. I don't know if this is up in the... There it is. Okay, good. But one of the paramount teachings of false prophets will be that of mocking. Number one, the return of Jesus Christ both for his church as well as number two his second coming to the nation of Israel to the Jewish people. Listen, these are the things we're going to be looking at tonight. Don't be a mocker. Well, you know, I know you go to a church or you're the pastor that says Jesus is coming back. I'm not the pastor that says Jesus is coming back. The Bible says Jesus is coming back and I'm repeating what the Bible says. There's so many people that they want to quote the Bible, but they don't know the Bible. …
… Despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty. Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. That's 2,000 years old. True or false? That's right. Next verse, very quickly. Next verse. 2 Peter 2. but there were also false prophets among the people even as there will be false teachers among you who will secretly bring in destructive heresies even denying the Lord who bought them and bring on themselves swift destruction. But these are like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed speak evil of the things that they do not understand and they will utterly perish in their own corruption. Wow. The Bible says this is the day that is going to This is the age that is going to describe the end times. A time, lack, or void of wisdom. Let's all stand. I want to, I'm going to have you stand, but I'm going to show you one more thing, which is just absolutely crazy. And you can look at it later in detail if you would look at the notes. …
… despisers of good traitors headstrong haughty lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of god and here's a crack up this is so scary but that it's funny having a form of godliness but denying its power in other words you can find them on church on Sunday that whole list we just read they're very spiritual people having a form of godliness they parade around like they're all good have you ever seen these shows where people have these lives that people are shocked to find out about the guy lived next door he was quiet normal guy mowed his lawn. And then you hear all the stuff that he was or is or whatever. There you go. The Bible says from such people turn away. How does this happen? The spirit of Antichrist. 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. We're almost done. that no one deceive you by any means for that day will not come unless the falling away comes first the apostasy apostasia the man of sin is revealed the son of perdition that is the antichrist that's the man he's known as the son of perdition by the way there was one other known as the son of perdition anybody know who he is Judas who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped. …
… Ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving. Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Having a form of godliness, but denying its power. Paul says have nothing to do with such people. In the last days, we're gonna have to make a conscious choice to turn away from the lower things of this world and turn to the truth of God's word. The biblical word is repent. Re means to turn. Pent is that which is the highest. Repent, turn. In fact, for some of you, your one assignment is to turn in the right direction. Turn away from the lower things that are distracting you from the higher things of the kingdom of God and turn toward them. And the problem is today, it's very common and very acceptable to have one foot in the church and one foot in the world. You're essentially split. And what do you do? You turn away from the things of the world. You turn to the things of God. You turn away from selfishness and turn to God. …
… and how there are people who are lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God in the last days this is what you're going to find people who don't really love God they love pleasure in fact there will be even churches that will try to lure them in with pleasure man come to our church we'll bring your family back together come to our church God will get you a job come to our church god will do this this this this this for you it's drawing them in by their own human desires by pleasure i mean look at all these events we have at the church it's going to be a blast come here okay i want that i want that i want that and the luring is with loving pleasure not loving him and so when the pleasure doesn't come they're they're not armed they're not armed with this type of theology that says, you know what? Suffering is going to come. Anyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. …
… unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness but denying its power avoid such people okay paul is writing to timothy here and he's not talking about the world he's talking about the church here he's not addressing atheists he says these people they have some sort of appearance of godliness but they deny its power these are not people that don't believe in godliness don't believe in god but much like the demons they believe there's a god but he says be careful of these people because they're not really lovers of god they're really lovers of pleasure and paul's saying you know in the end times it's going to get terrible the last days are going to come terrible times not because the world is going to be in sin the world has always been in sin the problem is how much that sin has crept into the church in the last days and people who attend these gatherings and call it church he says there's going to come a very very difficult time because people are going to be the first thing he says lovers of self false wildzam ЖДЛ might not be tested for yourself but there's truth in it regardless the thought that came to my mind is all of your Facebook accounts. …
… I mean they're having a big time. And the Bible speaks of these in 2 Timothy as lovers of pleasures. More than lovers of God. And they're those who are sitting in this building. And God has spoken to you time and time and time again. But you think of your sin. You think of the pleasures of this world. It may be vile sin. It may be homosexuality. It may be adultery. It may be fornication. It may be drunkenness. It may be thievery. It may be violence. It may not be those things. It just may be your lifestyle. And you get the idea, you know, if I come to Jesus, look what I will give up. And so the Holy Spirit of God is speaking to you over and over and over again, but you harden your neck through the pleasures of this world. The Bible speaks of those who are lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. Now let me say this. I would not for a moment tell you there's no pleasure in sin. …
