… that this revival started in was the church had become religious but spiritually complacent. It would be something like maybe having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof. it was kind of more cultural as opposed to transformation. Are you tracking with me? And so after the revival, people begin to rediscover, revival, we're going to come back to that re part, rediscover that Christianity is not something that is inherited. In other words, it can't be your grandmama's God. At some point, it has to be your God. And so this was about about personal relationship, and the focus on that revival was the new birth, and it became central to evangelical Christianity. Are we tracking? Can I break it down real quick? So that was the first one. The first one was, oh my God, this is, I really need to have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. That was the first great awakening, right? The second Great Awakening happened in 1790 through 1840, and the theme of this awakening was the church as a missional institution, right? And so this was about, and I'll just give you some of the leaders, and this happened in the United States, especially in the expanding frontier as the United States was expanding, and the key leaders here were Charles Finney and Barton W. Stone. And so America, watch this, America was expanding faster than the church. Are you tracking with me? And so that was the context of the revival started in, and then after there was a focus now on not just …
… Here's the kick. Having a form of godliness but denying its power from such people turn away. They look like believers but when you're not looking at them that's who they really are. And then there's a quote. I don't know if this is up in the... There it is. Okay, good. But one of the paramount teachings of false prophets will be that of mocking. Number one, the return of Jesus Christ both for his church as well as number two his second coming to the nation of Israel to the Jewish people. Listen, these are the things we're going to be looking at tonight. Don't be a mocker. Well, you know, I know you go to a church or you're the pastor that says Jesus is coming back. I'm not the pastor that says Jesus is coming back. The Bible says Jesus is coming back and I'm repeating what the Bible says. There's so many people that they want to quote the Bible, but they don't know the Bible. …
… this is so scary but that it's funny having a form of godliness but denying its power in other words you can find them on church on Sunday that whole list we just read they're very spiritual people having a form of godliness they parade around like they're all good have you ever seen these shows where people have these lives that people are shocked to find out about the guy lived next door he was quiet normal guy mowed his lawn. And then you hear all the stuff that he was or is or whatever. There you go. The Bible says from such people turn away. How does this happen? The spirit of Antichrist. 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. We're almost done. that no one deceive you by any means for that day will not come unless the falling away comes first the apostasy apostasia the man of sin is revealed the son of perdition that is the antichrist that's the man he's known as the son of perdition by the way there was one other known as the son of perdition anybody know who he is Judas who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped. …
… Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Having a form of godliness, but denying its power. Paul says have nothing to do with such people. In the last days, we're gonna have to make a conscious choice to turn away from the lower things of this world and turn to the truth of God's word. The biblical word is repent. Re means to turn. Pent is that which is the highest. Repent, turn. In fact, for some of you, your one assignment is to turn in the right direction. Turn away from the lower things that are distracting you from the higher things of the kingdom of God and turn toward them. And the problem is today, it's very common and very acceptable to have one foot in the church and one foot in the world. You're essentially split. And what do you do? You turn away from the things of the world. You turn to the things of God. You turn away from selfishness and turn to God. …
… special note not to associate with this particular brother. 2 Timothy 3 5, Titus 3 10. 2 Timothy 3 5, Titus 3 10. Having nothing to do with this brother. I want us to realize something. This is the exact opposite of what we think, isn't it? Like we think this is totally reversed. We think it is humble to welcome everyone as members of the church. We think it's a sign of humility to say, it doesn't matter what you continue to do in sin, you can still be a member. We think that's humble. In fact, we think it's prideful to do anything different. We would certainly call any church that's casting out members because they continue unrepentant and sin, who do they think they are? Holy, holier than thou people? Talk about legalism. That's what that church is all about. They're removing members. Don't gloss over this. We can't miss this. if by God's grace we are obedient to Him in Matthew 18 and 1 Corinthians 5, and God forbid that we would get to this point with a brother or sister, but if we did and a brother or sister was removed from this body, mark it down from the start, that will not be perceived. …
