… deceitful desires and be renewed in the spirit of your minds. To pneumati to noos humo. In the spirit of your mind. That's a very strange phrase. Spirit of your mind. Be renewed in the spirit of your mind. And I'm suggesting that's a way of talking about phronema, mindset. Your mind has a spirit, has a cast, has a bent, has a slant, has an atmosphere, has an ethos. Not just thoughts. It's not just a brain. You don't just have a brain with thoughts. Your mind leans. Your mind wants. Your mind is or is not happy. in the Lord. So what is that? And do we need to reset it every day? Why would you need to reset it every day if you're a Christian? Is it set at conversion? So that's what we're after, and our text is going to be Colossians 3, mainly. if you then, being raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. …

… don't give place to the devil, is the exhortation to be renewed in the spirit of your mind. inconsistent thoughts thoughts that violate the purposes of God over our life they are like the blocks in a wall and the enemy doesn't inhabit a thought in the same way he inhabits a pattern of thinking a pattern of thinking that wars against the purposes of God actually create a realm of safety for him to hide in and dwell in and to attack from this whole issue that I have had in my heart to talk to you about today is not devil focused at all in fact you know that whenever we teach on this subject we never make it about chasing the devil he's not worthy of my attention only long enough to get the crosshairs on him and pull the trigger is not worthy of our discussion, our infatuation. I have zero interest. But when it gets in the way, when there's a problem that has been created because I've given myself to believe something that is in violation to what God knows to be true, then I must repent and deal with that pattern of thought. …

The Belt of Truth
David Platt, 2025-07-23

… and is corrupt through deceitful desires and to be renewed in the spirit of your what? Minds. And to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God and true righteousness and holiness. Do you see it? To fight spiritual warfare, you need a renewed mind that is filled with the truth that's in Jesus. You need to leave behind futile ways of thinking, false ways of thinking in your mind, which we know from the very beginning of the Bible is where sin starts. Do you remember the first picture we see of spiritual warfare, Genesis chapter three, the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? The woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. …

Divine Design for the Workplace (Ephesians 6:5-9)
John MacArthur, 2022-11-27 · Scripture reading

… aside that old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lust of deceit, and And you have been renewed in the spirit of your mind, verse 24, and put on the new self. So we are new creatures in Christ, and we no longer walk the way we used to walk. How do we walk? Chapter 5, verse 1, as imitators of God, as His beloved children. He is our Father. We are in His family. We show evidence of that by our life. In verse 2, he says, walk in love as Christ loved you and gave Himself up for you. In verse 8, he says, walk as children of light. What does that mean? Verse 9, goodness, righteousness, and truth. In verse 15, walk as wise. So walk is simply a picture of daily Christian living. And we have gone through all these aspects of it in the months past, and it's been an incredibly blessed time together. The key to it comes in chapter 5, verse 18, and that is to be filled with the Spirit. …

The Walk of the True Christian, Part 4 (Ephesians 4:31-32)
John MacArthur, 2022-05-22 · Scripture reading

… in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth, each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and yet do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. And do not give the devil an opportunity. He who steals must steal no longer, but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with the one who has need. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. …

The Walk of the True Christian, Part 2 (Ephesians 4:25-32)
John MacArthur, 2022-05-01 · Scripture reading

… that in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new self which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. What marks a person who is unconverted is unrighteousness, unholiness, and deception. The transformation produces one who has been created in righteousness and holiness and truth. So by the time you get to chapter 4, verse 24, that last verse that I read, you have the theology of transformation. You have the theology of salvation. We have the theology of conversion. And then in verse 25 you see, therefore. And now we start in the rest of the epistle, which is the implications of that saving truth. Because you have been transformed, here is how you are to live. And so I want to read verses 25 to 27. This is where Paul begins the practical part of this epistle. …

Totally Transformed (Ephesians 4:17-24)
John MacArthur, 2022-03-13

… It's the same text that we looked at last week. But we were unable to finish it, so we'll do that this morning, Ephesians 4, verses 17 to 24. And I'm going to read it, and then we're going to look again at these wonderful words of divine revelation. So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer, just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart. And they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him just as truth is in Jesus. That in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth." Now we here have a comparison between the people before salvation and the same people afterward. …
