… Verse 1. Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn. So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here I am. Then he said, Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. Moreover, he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. …

… Listen now for God's word as it echoes to us from Exodus chapter 3, beginning with the first verse. Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led his flock beyond the wilderness and came to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush. He looked and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, I must turn aside and look at this great sight and see why this bush is not burned up. When the Lord saw that Moses had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush. Moses, Moses. And Moses said, here I am. Then God said, come no closer. Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. God said further, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob. …

Taking Miracles Seriously | Rabbi Michael Zedek | Church of the Resurrection
Rabbi Michael Zedek, 2025-09-08 · Scripture reading

Taking Miracles Seriously. Rabbi Michael Zedek. First, of course, thank you for that introduction, and as well, thank you for the opportunity to be here, although in effect I'm there, even though at the moment I'm here. To plunge in, I love stories, so here's a story that for me is memorable. It's based on the golden age of situation comedies in TV. of us are old enough to remember Mr. Ed. And while I don't do many impressions, here's my impression of Mr. Ed when he introduces himself to Wilbur. And as we would note, Wilbur is properly nonplussed, because it's not in our experience for horses to talk, let alone have the best lines in situation comedies. But interestingly, the Hebrew Bible has an exact parallel equivalent. Bilaam or Balaam and his talking donkey, or to be more accurate in terms of the Hebrew, his jackass, he has a conversation. As though it were a perfectly reasonable, everyday, commonplace thing to talk with a donkey. Perhaps the real point being, who is the jerk here, in fact. But more substantially, more critically, in the Hebrew Bible, every time what you or I would call a miracle occurs, no one draws the obvious or what we would call the correct lesson, which just may very well be the lesson at heart. So with that as background, let's plunge in. …

Move It To The Middle
Steven Furtick, 2025-02-24

I believe there are many of us, maybe not all of us, who would find ourselves in a moment like that. And so today I want to continue that from Exodus chapter 3, verses 1 through 11. and all the bible school students already know who we're talking about today somebody say moses moses we grew up singing a song in church called pharaoh pharaoh oh baby let my people go and then if you really got into it you would go uh yeah yeah yeah yeah it was to the tune of louie louie i don't want to get a copyright strike on youtube so i won't sing it but we would do that Pharaoh, Pharaoh, oh baby, let my people go. And then everybody would go, uh. And a quick story, one time I was 17 years old, just getting started in ministry. And I was leading that for the youth. And one of the parents was really uptight and she walked in and she saw how I had all the kids going, uh. And she said, don't do that again. That's not a holy, that's not a holy gesture. …

… Verse 1, chapter 3 of Exodus. Now Moses was pastoring the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Now watch this. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush, and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. Now listen, he'd seen lots of fires, lots of bushes burning, but he had never seen a bush that burned and burned and burned, but was not burned up, not consumed. Now watch this. So Moses said, I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight while the bush is not burned up. When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, here I am. Out of a situation unlike anything he'd ever experienced before, God got his attention. …

How God Gets Our Attention - Part 2

Out of a situation unlike anything he'd ever experienced before, God got his attention. He had never seen anything like that. Something so unusual. He had to stop and ask. Then God spoke to him. What you and I must do is to learn to live and listen, look for the presence of God in every circumstance of life. …
