… and all the living creatures with which the waters team according to their kinds and every winged bird according to its kind. and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them and said, Be fruitful and increase in number. Fill the waters of the sea and let the birds increase on the earth. And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. Then God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds, beasts and creeping things and wild animals of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth according to their kinds and the beasts according to their kinds and all the creeping things that creep across the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, Let us make humankind in our own image and after our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and over the beasts and over all the earth and all the creeping things that creep on the earth. …
… obviously, to see that as an analogy. You see there in verse 23 the language of birds and animals and creeping things, this threefold formula appears in Genesis 1 verse 20 and 24, or even more noticeable. Now, you can see in English the word image, icon in the Greek. Greek, think of Genesis 1 26, let us make man in our own image and in our likeness. Now, this is a perfectly fine translation, but if you could see the Greek, that word translated resembling is the exact same Greek word that's used in the Greek translation of Genesis 1 26 for likeness. Now, why doesn't it translate as likeness? Because we don't have a word that works that way. glory of the immortal God for images likeness is seeing mortal man. That's what it is. But we use resembling. But it's the same word right there. He has the word image and likeness. So we are put in the conceptual universe of Genesis chapter one because the ongoing sin and exchange in the world is the same foolish exchange that Adam and Eve made in the garden. And here it's described in verse 23 as is making the invisible God visible. …
… and woman and God. So right before what we read in Genesis 1 26, look at how all these other creatures were created according to their kinds. Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds. Livestock and creeping things and the beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds. Livestock according to their kinds. Everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good, but with humans, the language is totally different. There's no other kind like them. God said, let us make man in our image after our likeness. And this word image was used in that day. This is so good to describe how images or idols would represent gods or kings in such a way that we read, we won't turn there, but 1 Kings chapter 11, or sorry, 2 Kings chapter 11, verse 18, to worship an image was to worship that God. Or Daniel chapter 3, we read about King Nebuchadnezzar setting up an image, and to bow down to that image was to bow down to him as king. …
… in Genesis 1 and 2. Right before what we just read in Genesis 1 26, you see all these other creatures that were created according to their kinds. Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds, livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so. God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. But then in the very next verse with humans, the language is totally different. There's no other kind like them. They're made in the likeness of God. And God didn't just use the more impersonal let there be or let the earth bring forth this or that. Instead, God says very personally, let us make. A reference, by the way, to the Trinitarian nature of God. Let us make man in our image after our likeness. And then check this out. Genesis chapter 2, verse 6, describing how God created man. We read, then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. How close, intimate is that? God breathing life. God sharing breath with man. And then the first thing God does after he makes man and woman is he blesses them, and he gives them all these things. We see that word give twice. I give you all these things. And then God, looking at humanity, says, I saw everything …
