… of his promise. Look here now in Genesis 15. Just go to verse 1 there. After this, the word of the Lord came back to Abram in a vision. Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield and your very great reward. But Abram said, Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless? And the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of the Clippers. And Abram said, You have given me no children, so a servant in my household will be my heir. And then he took him outside and he said, Look up at the sky and count the stars, if indeed you can count them. Then he said to him, so shall your offspring be. … Would you help me thank God for those who labor among you, including this music ministry that has ushered us into the presence of God? I want to call your attention tonight to Genesis chapter 15, verses 1 through 6. I don't know what time they told you you were getting out of church tonight, but first night is the longest night of revival. And so ushers have locked the doors and it has just become an all-night prayer vigil. Or rearing back when Judas leans toward him on the night of his arrest. Judas, is it with a kiss that you betray the Son of Man? There is such sorrow in these stories, such crushing disappointment at the way things have turned out, in spite of Jesus' higher vision of them, his life's labor on their behalf. In the case of Lazarus, Jesus intervenes, bringing his friend back to life. But in the other two, he's more like us, suffering things that he cannot or will not change. He laments over a city that has killed people like him before and seems bent on doing it again. On the night of his arrest, he watches the police push Judas aside. Then he stops his friends from trying to save him by force. No more of this, he says, when one of them pulls out a sword and cuts off a trooper's ear. …

… those awards. In a vision, the Bible says, although Abraham did not see anything at first, he heard something and said, the word of the Lord came to him, the Bible says, and the first four words he heard were, do not be afraid, which tells you Abraham was afraid, or at least prone to being afraid, and who wouldn't have been? Sometimes even when you have prayed holes in the rug, begging for a word from God, even when you have announced to the universe that you are full ready for proof of divine life, still, even then, sudden results can turn your bones to water. You can start talking yourself out of what is happening as fast as you talked yourself in. Must not be fully awake yet. Must have been the habaneros on the enchiladas last night. What if this isn't God at all, but an angel from the other side? But Abraham must not have been all that afraid because he switched gears pretty quickly. Oh Lord God, he said, what will you give me? That's so embarrassing. …
