… the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, here I am. He said, do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing that you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked and behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of the place the Lord will provide, as it is said to the day, on the mount of the Lord it shall be provided. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, by myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore, and your offspring shall possess the gates of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because you have obeyed my voice. So Abraham returned to his young men and they arose and went together to Beersheba. …

The Triumph of God's Love (Romans 8:31-39)
John MacArthur, 2024-03-08

… and do nothing to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, me." And verses 15 and 16, "'Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, "'By myself I have sworn,' declares the Lord, "'because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you.'" The story of Jesus was different. Abraham had only one son, one that was a true child of the promise. In Him all the covenant promises would be fulfilled. In Him the nations would be blessed. Through Him salvation would come, and the Messiah would come, and He was willing to offer Him in death. Isaac was spared by God by divine intervention. Jesus was not. So the picture is really contrast. The willingness of Abraham to offer up Isaac provides only a faint analogy of the Father's ultimate self-sacrifice in refusing to spare His Son. …

… legitimate son, the son of the covenant, and I want you to offer him as a sacrifice. Listen Listen to this, it's Genesis 22, verse 12. Abraham is ready to offer Isaac. Okay, I won't spare my son. This is what you've asked me to do. An angel of the Lord, in verse 11, calls to Abraham and says, whoa, whoa, whoa, Abraham, Abraham, stop. Do not stretch out your hand against the lad and do nothing to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me. Thank you. you were willing to sacrifice your only son, and all the promises were bound up in him. Verse 15, the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will greatly bless you. Thank you. Abraham did not withhold his son, but God didn't require him to die. …

The Book of Genesis (Part 1)
Francis Chan, 2017-01-06

You know, verse 12, he says, do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me. we have to meditate on this as uncomfortable as it is because we're living in a time when people are telling you, you don't have to be that serious about God. Come on, Christ died for you. You don't have to be that. You don't have to sacrifice everything for him. and I'm reading the scriptures and looking at what Jesus said, what it requires to follow him, and it is about surrender. God wants us to be people who see him as so valuable, who long to be in the garden with him. Say, God, anything for you. And when Abraham was tested, he passed that test. He believed, and God says, okay, I can tell. You fear me and you haven't withheld anything from me, not even your son. …
