… after Adam and Eve have disobeyed God, have turned their backs on him, have done what he told them not to do, the Lord comes to the serpent, who has been the deceiver, and says to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and all the wild animals. You will crawl on your belly, and you will eat dust all the days of your life. Now, here is the conflict, verse 15, and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers, and he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. Now, there is a sense in which the entire Old Testament is the outworking of what we discover there in Genesis 3.15, that the conflict between the seed of woman and the serpent explains all of the antagonism towards the work of God in each generation. And that runs all the way through the intertestamental period and all the way into the New Testament in the conflicts that Jesus will engage in as Mark and the other gospel writers describe them. And it runs all the way out through the back end of the Bible, if you like, into the centuries of man's sins and into the twenty-first century, and while sociologists would laugh at such an assertion and historians would regard it as the apex of total foolishness, when men and women take their newspapers in a morning and say, what in the world is going on with the world? The answer is in Genesis 3.15. …
… she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. Then the Lord God said to the woman, what is this that you have done? The woman said, the serpent deceived me, and I ate. The Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, Cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field. On your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. To the woman, God said, I will surely multiply your pain and childbearing. In pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. And to Adam, God said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded, you shall not eat of it. Cursed is the ground because of you. …
… the Lord said to the woman what is this you have done the woman said the serpent deceived me and I ate so the Lord God said to the serpent because you have done this you are cursed more than any cattle and more than every beast of the field on your belly you shall go and you shall eat dust all the days of your life and I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed he shall bruise your head and that doesn't mean bruise like cute little bruise Hebrew word literally means a gaping hole crush your head gaping Thank you. and you shall bruise his heel. He won't leave unpierced. and you will not leave undefeated. I want to talk today, I want to kick this series off today from this subject, This Means War. This means war. Father, without you, I am nothing. You are the vine. I am but a branch. So my commitment in this moment, God, is through everything in my power to abide in you. …
… the woman whom you gave me to be with me she gave me the tree gave me uh of the tree and I ate and the Lord God said to the woman what is this that you've done and the woman said that serpent deceived me and I ate so the Lord God said to the serpent I mean just down the line because you have done this you are cursed more than all cattle and more than every beast of the field on your belly you shall go, which is interesting, which meant previously on its belly, it did not go. so this whatever the serpent was it didn't it didn't exist on its belly the curse put it on its belly wow and so on your belly you shall go and you shall eat dust all the days of your life and I will put enmity, there's that verse, between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed, he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. …
… Joseph's son, but I also have figured out I'm not Joseph's seed. I'm Mary's seed, and that's important because in Genesis 3, it was spoken about the serpent. The Lord said to the serpent, because you've done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field. On your belly will you go and dust will you eat all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. Her seed, he will crush your head and you will strike his heel. So it was important that Jesus be fully God and fully man. It was important that he be the seed of Mary, but he wasn't conceived by Joseph. And he understood that. He's like, I have a dad, I know. And I call him dad, Abba, Abba, Abba. When Joseph is in the workshop, I go, Abba. But I also know that though I have a dad, I have a father. Capital F-A-T-H-E-R. …
Go to verse 14. So the Lord God said to the serpent. Who's he talking to right here? Who's he talking to? The serpent. He's not talking to Adam, and he's not talking to Eve. He's talking to who? the serpent. So the Lord God said to the serpent, the wicked one, because you have done this. See, there's some things that have happened in your life that the enemy was able to do. The enemy did stuff to you and God's acknowledging it because you did this man. You lied to them. You sow doubt. You messed with my children because you have done this. Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life and I will put enmity between you and the woman and between you and your offspring and hers and he will crush your head and you will strike his heel. What? What's he saying? He's talking about in Genesis 3 15, the promised Messiah all the way back then. …
… And the man said, the woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me from the tree and I ate. And the Lord God said to the woman, what is this you have done? And the woman said, the serpent deceived me and I ate. And the Lord God said to the serpent and he didn't say anything. You know why? Because there wasn't anything to say. He knew exactly where he was and he knew exactly what was going on and what was happening. And so there wasn't any point in him making any excuse about what was going on. And so I want us to look at this passage and deal with something that all of us have to deal with. Because the truth is all of us at times are prone to blame someone else for our circumstances. Or blame someone else for something that they've said or something that they've done. And somehow we think it's going to make us feel better or look better. …
