Avoiding the Way of Cain
Robert Jeffress, 2026-09-02

… Look at verse 21. Then the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. Did you know this is a record of the very first death in the Bible? Nothing had died before this time. This is the very first death. and it was the death of an animal that God killed to provide a covering for Adam and Eve. God was teaching Adam and Eve and all of mankind the most important lesson we can ever learn. And that is something innocent has to die for something guilty and God must provide the sacrifice. And we see that theme over and over again throughout the Old Testament. For example, under the Mosaic law. Remember, there were all kinds of sacrifices required, but the highest day on the Jewish calendar was what? Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. We talked about that before. Remember what happened on that day? In the Holy of Holies, where nobody but the high priest could enter once a year, was the Ark of the Covenant. And in that Ark was a copy of the Ten Commandments. …

… till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken, for you are dust, and to dust you shall return. The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. And the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat and live forever. Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man and at the east of the garden of Eden, he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life. Let's pray. Oh God, we confess that we live in a land of confusion and distortion when it comes to your design for us as men and women. …

and that is really really bad news for you and for me and for everybody on the planet and it was a problem in eden there was another tree in the garden we see this in genesis 3 verse 21 the lord god made garments of skin for adam and his wife and he clothed them why because they they realized that they were naked and it says that they were ashamed. And so now God is sending them out of Eden. Why? Because there's another tree there. The Lord God said, the man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now this man is spiritually dead, so he must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever. God realized that Adam and Eve are spiritually dead, separated now from him and from the relationship they were created for. Should they eat from the tree of life, they'll live forever, but they'll live forever spiritually dead. …

… And God provides a sacrifice to create a covering for them. Look at Genesis chapter three, verse 21. The Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. So the picture here in Eden is now Adam and Eve in need of clothes associated with the sacrifice to cover over them. And then when you fast forward to the tabernacle, every year, once a year on the day of atonement, which means the day of covering for the people's sins. You had a priest, high priest, one person in the tabernacle who would put on particular clothes. Leviticus chapter 16 verse four says he shall put on the holy linen coat, shall have the linen undergarment on his body. He shall tie the linen sash around his waist and wear the linen turban. These are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on. And the word there for coat is the same word that's garment in Genesis chapter 3, verse 21. …

… It just absolutely is so sad. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the Lord God said, the man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever. What does that mean? It means he's dead spiritually separated from God. If he were to eat from the tree of life and live forever, he would live forever separated from God. So God has got to do everything he can to prevent him from eating from the tree of life because he's already now eaten from the knowledge of good and evil and spiritually he has died. And so God didn't love this moment, but we see the ultimate arc of the story of the gospel in his mercy. The Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. …

God's Good Design in Humanity
David Platt, 2025-09-24

… guilt and shame like we all experience and struggle with as humans in this world. And God provides a sacrifice to create a covering for them. Genesis chapter 3 verse 21 says, the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skin and clothed them. So that word garments right there, picture it here in Eden, they now needed clothes associated with a sacrifice to cover over them. So watch this. Now we're getting really close to how all this applies to you and me, hang with me, you fast forward to the tabernacle. Every year on the day of atonement, which means the day of covering for the people's sins, the high priest would put on particular clothes. Leviticus chapter 16 verse 4 says, he shall put on the holy linen coat. And that word right there is the same exact word that was used in Genesis 3 verse 21 to describe Adam and Eve's garments here. He shall put on this holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body. He shall tie the linen sash around his waist and wear the linen turban. These are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and put them on. So got this picture of covering. …

The Thread of Grace - Louie Giglio
Louie Giglio, 2024-12-08

… And then a few verses down, it says, the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. They sinned, they knew they were naked, they were now ashamed, and God intervened into their nakedness and into their shame, and God killed an animal in the garden and took the skin of the animal and he made garments to cover and clothe the man and the woman. The very first sacrifice. in time and in history was all because of God's grace and obviously was pointing to a time when another sacrifice would be made by God. We exist because of God. We are living because of God. The grace of God is already showing up in the earliest part of man's story. But mankind they went nuts and they were wicked beyond wicked. The Lord says in chapter six, then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry. …
