… though the olive crop fails, and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in God my Savior. The sovereign Lord is my strength. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer. He enables me to go on the heights for the director of music on my stringed instruments. Thanks be to God for his word. Father, now we pray that in turning to your Word, the Spirit of God will teach us and that we will be changed as a result of our encounter with you, the living God, through your written Word, the Bible, as we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen. Life, by its very nature, is untidy. It constantly defies our attempts to control it. We are challenged by it on multiple levels on virtually a daily basis. Physically, we are clearly not in charge, and silly if we think it to be other than that. …
… no fruit, though there are no sheep in the pen, no cattle in the stalls, here it comes. Yet I will, even though I will, even though I will. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in God, my Savior. Why? Because the sovereign Lord is my strength. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer. He enables me to tread on the heights. So there may not be grapes today. There may not be olive crops today. There'll be no produce in the field, no cattle in the stall, no sheep to be had today. But I'm telling you, my hope is in God. He is an overcomer. I am an overcomer in Him. And so even though it's the darkest of days, I will still praise Him. Even though it's the hardest of times, I will still know that my God is an overcoming God and I am an overcomer in him. And that's how that this peace, this oneness can produce praise. …
… and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength. He will make my feet like deer's feet and he will make me walk on my high hills to the chief musician with my stringed instruments. I love that. Again, he's a worship leader, right? So he responds to all of this as a true creative. He writes a poem, he writes a Psalm. And he says, hey, when you play this, get my guitar. Mine's better than yours. You play on my guitar. Sounds better, right? My stringed instruments. I'm sure we can assume that Habakkuk did not get the answer that he expected when he started this whole discussion three chapters ago. He didn't expect the answer that he got. But while he knows that there are still difficult days ahead of him, something has shifted in his outlook. Because now he knows that the only certainty is found in God. …
… and the field produced no fruit. Though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, though everything that I wanted and I hoped for is not there, he says, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in God, my Savior. This is Shijanoth. This is not a, half-hearted song to God. This is a cry from the depths of my soul. This is a faith that worships even when everything feels wrong. This is a faith that believes even when the eyes don't see. This is chapter three, Shigunath. It's praise with exclamation marks. And just to be really, really clear so you understand. This isn't making the best of a bad situation. Well, nothing going, but at least we have, at least, no, no, no, this is wrestling and embracing. This is acknowledging, like, this is not good. I don't like it. There are no grapes on the vine. There are no sheep in the pen. And I declare the Lord is still on the throne. …
… even if nothing gets better, he says this, yet I will rejoice in the Lord and I will take joy in the God of my salvation. What Habakkuk does, he acknowledges, yep, no, this is real scarcity. This is real starvation. This is real hardship. And he chooses joy. He chooses unconditional hope. think about that what would that look like in my life i don't get what i'm desperate for i don't get what i'm waiting for i don't get what i pray for i don't get what i work for and i still have this unconditional hope i i watched a recently a protestant pastor who was challenged on this and the pastor was describing how he and his wife weren't able to have children and and he's talked about how it was a great pain in his wife and in the life of his heart of his wife. And he said some people who weren't Christian, who weren't believers, they came up to him and they said, okay, pastor. He said, answer us this. Where's your God now? You've been praying for your child. You don't have a child. You can't have children. Where is your God now? His response was so powerful. His response was a Habakkuk response. His response was this. He said, I know this. I know God is a good God. And he answers prayer. I know that God answers prayer. …
… even if there's no cattle in the stalls, even if everything's been taken from me, Habakkuk 3.18 says, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. And the more you get good at counting all the blessings, because I think sometimes we just count all the hardships. We count all the difficulties. We count all the people who betrayed us. We count all the hard things. We count this happened and this happened. But if we get better at counting all of our blessings, if we get better at rehearsing to ourselves how good God has been, how kind he has been, his gifts in creation, his gifts in friendship, his gifts that I'm in a body that's working today. I got some creaky parts just like you, but you know what? I got a body. I'm not in the hospital. I'm not in critical care. I'm grateful today. Are you grateful? That'll foster joy in your... This is what David did when he said in Psalm 126, 3, the Lord has done great things for me, and we are glad. The Lord has done great things. Has God been good to you? Has God been kind to you? Do you got, like I do, a smoking hot wife? Do you got kids who are awesome? Do you got a church that's fantastic? Do we got a country that we get to live in that's the greatest on this planet? Come on, I'm grateful. God has done great things for us, and we are glad. …
