… and how it should play out in our life. James chapter three, verse 13. If you are wise and understand God's ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there's selfish ambition in your heart, don't cover up the truth by boasting and lying For jealousy and selfishness are not God's kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. Verse 16, for wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. So here's my next point if you're taking notes. We need to live our lives God's way, not the way of this world. And that starts with a new way of thinking. Biblical and godly wisdom. This is in direct contrast to the so-called wisdom this world offers. We have a contrast here in James three about the wisdom from above and the wisdom from below. The wisdom of the scripture or the wisdom of this culture. …
… no such thing and some of you are like pastor mike you're just talking let's look at the word james 3 13 this jacked me up some of y'all need to tattoo this on your head it says if you are wise and understand god's ways so that's a huge prerequisite that you're wise and you understand god god's ways prove it by living an honorable life doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom watch this but if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart. Like, like this is the beautiful thing about it. Cause nobody comes out and it's like, I'm ambitious. Like I'm trying to do it. God says, if there is a drop of ambition in your heart, like there's something in you that's trying to make a way, a name, do more for yourself. If there's a drop, he said, I look at the heart man looks on the outward and look, he even addresses it in the next verse. He says, don't cover up the truth with boasting and lying. …
… Listen to what James says. James chapter 3, verse 13. Who is wise in understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter, listen up everybody. If you have bitter envy, I know people like this. You know people like this. You can't stand to be around them because when you're around them, you feel like you need to go take a shower. They're really hard to be around because they're filled with envy. They can't stand that someone else got the promotion and they're bitter about it. Or they hear somebody being blessed by God and they just grind their teeth. That's a wicked heart. They have bitter envy, self-seeking in your hearts. Do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. and where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy, good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. …
And you need not be told with what weight the welfare of your souls seemed to lie on his heart, and how he instructed, and reproved, and warned, and exhorted you, with all authority, and with a fatherly tender concern for your eternal good. And with what wisdom he presided in the house of God, and guided its affairs; and also counselled and directed you in private, under your particular soul exercises and difficulties. You know how he has brought you up, (for most of you have been trained up from your childhood under his ministry,) with what authority, and with what judgment, prudence, and steadiness, he has conducted you, as well as meekness and gentleness. You know his manner of going in and out among you, how exemplary his walk and conversation has been, with what gravity, judgment, and savour of holiness, he has walked before you, as a man of God. You have enjoyed great advantages for your souls’ good, under his ministry: that you had such a minister was your privilege and your honour; he has been an ornament to the town of Hatfield; and his presence and conversation amongst you has been both profitable and pleasant; for though it was such as did peculiarly command awe and respect, yet it was, at the same time, humble and condescending: it tended both to instruct and entertain those that he conversed with: as a wise man, and endued with knowledge, he showed out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. …
5. But suppose it were not forbidden, how can you on principles of reason spend your money in a way which God may possibly forgive, instead of spending it in a manner which he will certainly reward? You will have no reward in heaven for what you lay up; you will, for what you lay out. Every pound you put into the earthly bank is sunk: it brings no interest above. But every pound you give to the poor is put into the bank of heaven. And it will bring glorious interest; yea, and such as will be accumulating to all eternity. 6. Who then is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him resolve this day, this hour, this moment, the Lord assisting him, to choose in all the preceding particulars the “more excellent way:” And let him steadily keep it, both with regard to sleep, prayer, work, food, conversation, and diversions; and particularly with regard to the employment of that important talent, money. Let your heart answer to the call of God, “From this moment, God being my helper, I will lay up no more treasure upon earth: This one thing I will do, I will lay up treasure in heaven; I will render unto God the things that are God’s: I will give him all my goods, and all my heart.”
