… Now, fourth thing that you can do is you can pray for each other. Pray with and pray for each other. Look at this next verse, James 5, 16. Make this your common practice. confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed would you like to live together whole and healed well it tells you first you admit it when you're wrong and second you pray for each other and you pray with each other and then finally you follow God's word keep in God's word Proverbs 3.6 says this listen for God's voice in everything you do everywhere you go he's the one who will keep you on track. This is the most amazing statistic I've ever read. Marriage Magazine published a national study and discovered one out of three marriages ends in divorce. But when the couple is married in a church service that number drops to only one out of every 50 ending in divorce. …
… We'll talk about it in a minute. Flip over to James 5, verses 16 through 18. I knew exactly which Scripture to use when I thought about preaching the prayer you're not proud of or the prayers. We have more than one, don't we? of us. I've done workouts I wasn't proud of before. Holly will say, Did you get your workout in? I say, I got it in, but it wasn't anything to brag about. I'm not posting about that one. I've definitely written songs I wasn't proud of. That's the way you write a good song, is write a ton of songs you never show anybody. Then one day, hopefully, something will show up that's worth showing somebody. So, my phone is full of songs you can't hear, and we will not be singing on a Sunday at Elevation Church, and you ought to praise the Lord for that. Come on. Praise the Lord for that. But when we talk about the prayers you're not proud of and what my church member said to me, because I know we all can relate to what he said, I thought of James 5, 16 through 18, where the Bible says, therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. …
… we're commanded to pray for each other. And we're commanded to pray for each other's healings. And the Bible tells us in James chapter 5, verse 14 to 16, that we are to pray for each other and anoint each other with oil as a symbol of God's anointing. James 5, 14 says this, if you're sick, If you're sick, ask your church leaders to pray for you, literally elders, ask your church leaders to pray for you and anoint you with oil in the name of the Lord. Now, there's nothing magical or mystical about the oil. There's nothing supernatural, nothing, properties that make it, it's just oil, it's olive oil. But it is the faith, anoint with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer that is offered in faith will bring healing. Notice, not the oil, but the prayer in faith. will bring healing and the Lord will restore your health. He says, and pray for each other so that you will be healed. The prayer of a godly person is powerful and effective. …
… James said this. James says, therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other. Two weeks ago, we learned to do that, right? We're praying together daily. confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. Watch this, you confess to God for forgiveness. If you confess your sins, be faithful and just forgive you. You confess to each other for healing. Confess your sins one another and pray for each other that you may be healed. Most people stop at the first one. We confess to God and we think it's good enough. But James says, no, you confess to each other and pray that you're healed. I'll tell you about confession and healing in my marriage. I tell this story with full blessing from Amy, just so you know, she signed off on this one. Not the recycling one and not some of the other ones, but maybe this one. So earlier in our marriage, when I was younger, I was more vulnerable then to visual temptation. …
… I want to say to you this evening, let's go Alfred Street to the Word of God that's found in the book of James, chapter 5, verses 13 through 16. As it is our custom, I would ask you to stand that we might reverence the reading of God's Holy Word, realizing that the theme for this month is teach us to pray. And it reads, is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church. And let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick. and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. I would ask you this evening to wrap your thoughts around a theme. …
… TO SEEK AS WE PRAY. MAYBE IT'S THE POWER OF GOD BECAUSE JAMES ALSO SAID IN JAMES FIVE VERSE SIXTEEN, THE EFFECTUAL, FERVENT PRAYER OF A RIGHTEOUS MAN AVAILETH MUCH. AND THAT WORD EFFECTUAL MEANS POWERFUL, STRETCHED OUT PRAYER. YOU KNOW, WE, WE PRAY SO MANY LITTLE GIDDY, FRIVOLOUS, NOW I, NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP TYPE PRAYERS. MANY OF US PRAY AND 15 MINUTES LATER WE COULD NOT EVEN TELL YOU WHAT WE ASKED GOD FOR IF OUR LIFE DEPENDED UPON HIM. BECAUSE WE DO NOT PRAY WITH SERIOUSNESS. WE DO NOT PRAY WITH INTENTION. ONE DAY A LADY CALLED ME AND SHE SAID, PASTOR, I NEED YOU TO COME OVER TO MY HOUSE. I'VE GOT A PRAYER BURDEN, AND I WANT YOU TO PRAY WITH ME. I SAID, I'LL BE THERE. I WENT TO HER HOUSE, I SAID, WHAT IS THE PRAYER BURDEN? SHE SAID, PASTOR, IT IS MY SON, HE IS A DRUNKARD. I WANT YOU TO PRAY WITH ME FOR MY SON. AND THEN SHE SAID, AND HIS WIFE HAS JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER. MY SON IS A DRUNKARD. MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, AND I WANT YOU, MY PASTOR, PLEASE TO PRAY WITH ME?" I SAID, I WILL. SHE SAID, I'VE ASKED MY SON TO COME OVER. I SAID, WONDERFUL. SO THE THREE OF US WERE THERE, THE DRUNKARD SON, THE MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER, WHO WAS CONCERNED, AND THE PASTOR. AND WE GOT DOWN ON OUR KNEES AND BEGAN TO PRAY. AND SHE PRAYED, AND I PRAYED, …
