… the next few verses describe what he owned and his children there were ten of them verse six now there was a day when the sons of god came to present themselves before the lord and interesting the hebrew text says and the satan and the satan also came among them the lord said to the Satan, from where did you come? Then the Satan answered the Lord and said, from roaming about on the earth and walking around on it. The Lord said to Satan, have you considered my servant Job? For there's no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil? Satan answered the Lord, Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands and his possessions have increased in the land. Job 1-2
Skip Heitzig, 2026-08-05

… down. The challenge is on. Of course, Job doesn't know this. It'd be helpful if Job had the book of Job, but he doesn't have it. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house. Okay, there's a series of four tragedies that will occur. Here's the first. And a messenger came to Job and said, the oxen were plowing, the donkeys feeding beside them. and when the Sabians, Sabians are people that live in Sheba, you remember the queen of Sheba? This is Arabia, northern Arabia. The Sabians, a marauding band of nomads, raided them and took them away and indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was speaking, another also came and said, the fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them. And I alone have escaped to tell you. Stop there. This servant says to Job, it's the fire of what? God, right? Probably referring to a lightning strike that caused a wildfire that burned this up fire of god actually who sent the fire satan yes god gave go ahead challenge is on but don't touch his person so the second tragedy that happens is a lightning strike fire from heaven that the servant mistakenly calls, this is God's fault. …

So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord. Now what happened on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, that a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabaeans attacked and took them, they also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another also came and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another also came and said, The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another also came and said, your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house. …

… Beginning about in verse 13, we're in chapter 1. There was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house. And there came a messenger unto Job saying, The oxen were plowing and the asses feeding beside them. And the Sabaeans fell upon them and took them away. Yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword. And I only am escaped alone to tell thee. That is, first of all, Job had lost his finances. His animals, his flocks, his herds. He was a rancher. and in one fell swoop they were all taken away. Now, if tomorrow morning you wake up a pauper, if the stock market crashes and goes to the bottom, and you have everything in stocks and bonds, and your so-called fortune is gone, can you still trust God? Can you? Well, I hope so. Job became bankrupt overnight. There was the loss of finances. That's verses 13 through 17. And then right on the heel of that, not only the loss of finances, he lost his family. …

… NOTHING WRONG. LOOK BEGINNING IN CHAPTER ONE IN VERSE 13, AND THERE WAS A DAY WHEN THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS, THERE WAS A DAY WHEN HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS WERE EATING AND DRINKING WINE IN THEIR ELDEST BROTHER'S HOUSE. AND THERE CAME A MESSENGER UNTO JOB AND SAID, THE OXEN WERE PLOWING AND THE ASSES FEEDING BESIDE THEM, AND THE SABEANS FELL UPON THEM AND TOOK THEM AWAY. YEA, THEY HAVE SLAYN THE SERVANTS WITH THE EDGE OF THE SWORD, AND I ONLY AM ESCAPED TO TELL THEE. AND WHILE HE WAS YET SPEAKING, THERE CAME ANOTHER ALSO, AND SAID, THE FIRE OF GOD HAS FALLEN FROM HEAVEN, AND HATH BURNED UP THE SHEEP AND THE SERVANTS, AND CONSUMED THEM, AND I ONLY AM ESCAPED TO TELL THEE. AND WHILE HE WAS YET SPEAKING, THERE CAME ANOTHER ALSO, AND SAID, THE CHAUDEANS MADE OUT THREE BANDS, AND FELL UPON THE CAMELS, AND HAVE CARRIED THEM AWAY, YEA, AND SLAY THE SERVANTS WITH THE EDGE OF THE SWORD, AND I ONLY AM ESCAPED TO TELL THEE." JUST LIKE THAT, JOB, WHO WAS ONE OF THE WEALTIEST MEN OF HIS DAY, LOST IT ALL. HIS POSSESSIONS ARE STRIPPED FROM HIM. JOB WENT TO BED A MILLIONAIRE, AND HE WOKE UP A PAUPER. JUST LIKE THAT. …
