A Penetrating Reproof from the Almighty, Part 1
Chuck Swindoll, 2026-09-16 · Scripture reading

… Now gird up your loins like a man, and I will ask you, and you instruct me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding, who set its measurements? since you know? Or who stretched the line on it? On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? If you were to list the questions between here and the end of the book, you'd find 77 that Job is asked. none of them able to be answered by Job. Humbled and broken, chapter 40, Job responds in verse 3, Job answered the Lord and said, Behold, I am insignificant. What can I reply to you? I lay my hand on my mouth once I have spoken, and I will not answer. Even twice, and I will add no more. It's an old Hebrew colloquialism that means I have already said more than I should. …

… Wow. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me. I like verse 4, because when people tell me that the earth is 400 trillion billion quadzillion years old, here's what I ask them. How do you know? Were you there? it's a big guess you know all the sciences applied by the way side note you can't get the sciences to agree on the age of the earth did you know that the astrophysicists say that the universe is much younger than what we thought and the geophysicists say no it's much older it's got to be older some people argue that the earth is older than everything else because what's on the earth is so complex No other body that's observable has complex life like we do. So if you're going to have an evolutionary theory, it's got to be super old. Older than Jupiter, older than Venus. No, no, you can't have that. This group begins to argue with that group. And the Christians in the middle, we never got degrees in physics. …

… for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where was thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? And who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the cornerstone thereof when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job, sit down. I want to ask you some questions, son. Job Were you here when I made everything? Job When I created this universe When I flung this world out into space When I fashioned it all Were you there? Do you understand Job? Well friend the scientists today with their Hubble telescope Are still trying to figure out the same thing And they've not figured it out And Job has not figured it out And you won't figure it out And there's some things that God knows When nobody else knows Isn't that true? And what God is saying to Job, Job, when I did all this, did I ask your advice? …

… THY LOINS LIKE A MAN, FOR I WILL DEMAND OF THEE AND ANSWER THOU ME. WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I LAID THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH? DECLARE IF YOU HAVE UNDERSTANDING. AND THEN THE REST OF THIS CHAPTER IS FULL OF QUESTIONS LIKE THAT. HE ASKED JOB SOME OF THE QUESTIONS, THE HARDEST QUESTIONS ON EARTH. OF COURSE JOB HADN'T GOT THE FOGGIEST. AND GOD SAYS, NOW JOB, YOU'VE BEEN ASKING ME QUESTIONS. JOB, YOU DON'T EVEN BEGIN TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND MY WAYS AND YOUR WAYS. AS THE HEAVENS ARE HIGH ABOVE THE EARTH, ARE MY WAYS ABOVE YOUR WAYS AND SO FORTH. AND SO GOD NEVER REALLY ANSWERS JOB'S QUESTIONS. HE JUST ASKED JOB SOME QUESTIONS TO, TO SAY TO JOB, JOB, LISTEN, DID I CONSULT YOU WHEN I DID ALL OF THIS? WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I, WHEN I FLUNG THIS WORLD OUT INTO SPACE? WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I SPREAD OUT THE SKIES? AND WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I SCOOPED OUT THE SEAS AND HEAPED UP THE MOUNTAINS? WHERE WERE YOU, JOB? NOW JOB JUST HAD TO SIT THERE AND LOOK DUMB. JOB, THERE'S SOME THINGS YOU DON'T NO, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, I AM THE CREATOR, I AM THE SOVEREIGN GOD, I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT. THE FIRST THING JOB LEARNED ABOUT GOD IS THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD, AND THEN HE LEARNED THE SUFFICIENCY OF GOD, AND NOW WE'RE REALLY CLOSING IN, GO TO CHAPTER 42, CHAPTER 42. HE LEARNS THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD. HE LEARNS THAT GOD IS GOD AND HE, HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS, AND …
