… Because it was made by a mathematician. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And all things that came to be came to be through that Word. I don't know about you, Mr. Rationality, I'll often say, But that strikes me as a much more rational answer to the question of universal intelligibility. Okay, then I say, while you're thinking about that, let me ask you a follow-up question. How is it that we are capable of understanding the intelligibility of the world? You say, well, no, it's from your mind or it's from your brain. Okay, but you're a complete materialist, right? You don't think there's any purpose or direction of the universe. It's under no intelligent direction. Things just happen by dumb chance, by the accidents of evolution. And that's how the brain was produced, according to you. Yeah. Well, here I echo the great John Lennox, the Oxford mathematician who was an apologist too. He said, well, why in the world would you trust it? …
our pastor Reverend Dr. Frederick Douglas Haynes III. Come on give God praise for the word of God. John chapter 2019 through 23 a breath of fresh air. There might be someone here tonight you've heard the word of God and you want to receive that breath of fresh air. … Perfect unity, uncreated. John 1, verses 1 through 3 tell us, In the beginning was the Word, the Son of God, Jesus the Christ. In the beginning was Jesus. And the Word was with God. And the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him and without Him. Nothing was made that was made. And John 1.14 goes on to tell us later in that chapter that the Word became flesh. He entered into His own creation to save us. Revelation 1.8, this is Jesus speaking to the Apostle John. Jesus says, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. That's Jesus, the eternal Christ, the Son of God, uncreated, self-existent. And a personal favorite of mine on this topic of Jesus being eternal is John chapter 8, verses 52 through 59, more specifically verse 58. We see here in John 8, Then the Jews said to him, Now we know you have a demon. …
… that Nathanael thought that Jesus came from Nazareth, but Jesus didn't really come from Nazareth. If John chapter 1, verse 1 through 3 is correct, and through Jesus everything was made that was made, that means Jesus didn't come from Nazareth. Nazareth came from Jesus, and I came to preach about Jesus today. Oh, I preached that better than y'all responded. Through him all things were created. He is not subject to what he made. He is not subject to a human label. He is not a baby that was born in a barn. He is the preexisting God who in John 1, verse 14 became flesh, that's incarnation, and dwelt among us. And we beheld his glory, the glory as of the one who came from the Father. So they said he came from Nazareth. He said he came from the Father. They said he came from a small place. He said, I came from a place that you've never seen, because in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and nothing exists without him. …
… and the word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. The question we have is, is that worth the wait? Like, is what God has done, is that worth the wait? Because think about this, from the beginning of the story, from the actually very first story. Here's Genesis chapter one and two, chapter three, everything falls apart. But in the midst of Genesis chapter three, Genesis chapter three, verse 15, God promises, he promises that there is going to be one who crushes the head of the serpent. There is gonna be one who restores all things. And then the whole rest of the story is people waiting from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob, to the judges, to the kings, to the divided kingdom, to the civil war, to exile, through all the whole entire story, all the way to Jesus. is that worth the wait? I was thinking about, you know, this, think of right now, Christmas Day. I think a lot of us, we get really excited. …
… Now the word is a person. He was with God in the beginning. So we've got a word in the beginning that was with God and was God. And we know that the word, capital W-O-R-D, is a he who was with God in the beginning. But more than that, verse 3, through him, the word, all things were made. So how did the Trinity affect the creation of the cosmos? Through the word. And who is the word? We're gonna see in just a moment. Jesus is the word. So he was the agent of creation for the triune God. Through him, all things were made. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. You're like, what is the deal with John 1 and pulling this out? Well, I haven't put it back in yet. And when I took it out, it was for a very special occasion because our resident astronaut, Shane Kimbrough, many of you were here when he brought this back, went into space a few years ago on a SpaceX rocket lifting off from Florida. …
… In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, God, and the Word was God. Chew on that. And listen to this. The same was in the beginning with God. It doesn't mean that He had a beginning. He was there when anything else had a beginning. That's what it means. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. Everything has this stamp on it, made by Jesus. Made by Jesus. The devil has no raw material. All he can do is pervert what God has made. He's a pervert. And you can just say that to his face sometimes. Satan, you're a pervert. He perverts what God has made. And you read over there in Revelation chapter 19, verse 13, concerning Jesus, and it says this, His name is called the Word of God. That's His name, the Word of God. Now, what is the conclusion that you draw from that? That the character of the Bible and the character of Jesus are linked together. …
… basically more than anything else for the church's confession of Trinity. We read, He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him. Without Him nothing was made that was made. So that Jesus who came to this earth is now identified as the incarnation of that member of the Trinity for whom, by whom, and in whom all things were made. So that what John is saying in extraordinary ways is this, the one I'm going to tell you about, the one that I want you to believe in, and the one in whom there is life is the one who created you in the first place. There was nothing made that was made except through Him. We will see, I hope, in the weeks and months to come that there will be two words that will appear in John's gospel again and again and again, and those words are the words life and the word light. And he says in verse 4, in him was life. …
