Sermons on John 1:33

I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.

… play but also to love to the point of death and even in the gospel today when John the Baptist sees Jesus he says behold the lamb of God we hear lamb we think innocent we hear lamb we think light and fluffy we hear lamb and we think oh Jesus tender meek and mild no John said behold the lamb because that meant lamb means sacrifice that's the one who's going to give of himself why because He came here to play, but he also came here to love to the point of emptying himself out. He's going to win our souls by offering himself. He's going to win our bodies by offering his own. And he's going to win our hearts by revealing us his heart. There's a story in the Gospels I love. When life narrows down and the great crisis of sin and judgment closes in, God has to show us Jesus, just as he showed John. St. Paul says, No one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12, verse 3. Dear God, take this down into our hearts. …

This is He of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me, and I did not know him, but that he should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he remained upon him. I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. And again the next day John stood with two of his disciples and looking at Jesus as he He walked, He said, Behold the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard Him speak, and they followed Jesus. And Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, What do you seek? And they said to Him, Rabbi, which is to say when translated, Teacher, where are you staying? …
