Mark one is not the first time these men have laid eyes on Jesus. They've heard him in and around the Galilean area, back to Mark 1. There's a reason I mentioned that, and we will get to it right away from what Mark writes. Now, look at verse 16 of Mark 1. As he was going along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea, for they were fishermen. Now, where were they? They were on the Sea of Galilee up in that, most likely in that northwest corner area we just looked at on our maps. And they are casting a net into the water. Now, when you and I think of fishing, we think of a casting rod or a fly rod. But when you're a commercial fisherman, you fish with nets. In those days, there weren't powered boats, only sailing vessels. And so a little boat would go in the water and the fishermen would carry a large net, circular in shape, with weights on the edges and would cast the net into the water. …
… Jesus. Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Now look at what happens as a result. Go over to verse 40 in John chapter 1. It says, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. And the first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, we have found the Messiah, that is the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. So John sees Jesus. He announces who he is. Andrew sees who he is. First thing he does is he goes and tells Simon. Then look down in verse 44. Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, we have found the one Moses wrote about in the law and about whom the prophets also wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. So three people encounter Jesus. And the first thing they do is what? They share that word, share Christ, introduce others to Christ, share Christ with people around them. …
He who has ears to hear the Word of God, let him hear. Let us pray. Again, our Father and our God, we look to Your Word, for in it we find truth, unvarnished truth, truth that comes from Thee. And as we hear the testimony of John the Baptist, give to our minds and to our hearts understanding. that we might with all of our souls be pleased to sing the Agnus Dei, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Amen. Amen. In England, it's always a momentous occasion when one of the citizens achieves knighthood and has the opportunity to come before the monarch to be given the title Sir. And in England, as monarchies go, people are very jealous of the titles that they receive, from king and queen to queen mom, to prince and princess, to duke and duchess, to Earl and Lady and so on. And people covet the bestowal of ranking titles. I've said in the past, the most titled person in all of human history is Jesus of Nazareth. …
