The point is that these works were given to Jesus to do to prove he was the Messiah. In John 10 verses 37 and 38, John wrote, quoting Jesus, if I do not do the works of my Father, don't believe. But if I do them, though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father. Now, those are the four Greek words that are translated or associated with miracles. There is a fifth word that although it's not found in the Bible, its principle is woven throughout the Bible, and it's the word providence. Have you ever heard people talk about divine providence? Many of our nation's forefathers talked about providence. Providence means to see beforehand. It refers to God's ability to see beforehand what happens to us. Isn't that a comforting thought that God knows ahead of time? That when something unexpected happens to you, something tragic, something tragic happens to me, God doesn't slap his forehead and say, oh, I can't believe that happened to Robert. Why? He's in a pickle now. What is he going to do? …

And it's the word providence. Have you ever heard people talk about divine providence? Many of our nation's forefathers talked about providence. Providence, what does it mean? It comes from two Latin words, pro, which means beforehand, and the dara, which we get our word video from, which means to see. Providence means to see beforehand. … Now if you don't believe my words, believe at least because of my works. verse 37. That's the argument. If I do not do the works of my father, then don't believe me. Implied if I do, then believe me. And they reacted in good religious fashion. They were seeking to seize him. He eluded their grasp. and then he went to an area where there were some sheep they believed. Now I obviously left out a very important section. I want to save it till the last. Look at John 10 27. We've talked about goats quite a bit this morning. We've talked about those who are not among the sheep. I want to talk about the sheep as I close the message. I find in verses 27 through 30, four characteristics of bonafide sheep. Use them as a checkpoint in your life this morning. You sit there and you wonder, am I a sheep? Well, to be precise about it, you should be able to go back in your mind and call attention to a day, though you may not be able to date it, a time in your life when you said, Lord, I accept your plan of salvation personally. …
… and turn to John 10 John 10 verse 37. if I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me. all right john chapter 10 verse 37 if i do not do the works of my father what are the works the works are miracle signs and wonders those works testify of his identity yes yes i'm i'm giving you the answer before i ask the question so everybody should pass this test if you're just listening. If I do not do the works of my father, do not believe me. the prophets announced who Jesus was. John the Baptist came, announced who he was. Nature, the star in the east, announced who he was. Angels showed up and testified who he was. Jesus says, you can ignore all of those if I don't do miracles. if I do not do the works of my father, do not believe me. he said greater works than these shall you do now i've heard people say what's greater because there's more of us no no that's not what he's saying that's a pointless illustration i'm going to be for him to say i'm going to be followed by millions of people who believe and they will do more than i did as one person that's a pointless point He is announcing greater. …
… Look at what he says next, verse 37. If I'm not doing the works of my father, then do not believe me. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works that you may know and understand that the father is in me and I am in the father. Even if you can't bring yourself to believe my words, what I'm saying to you right now, believe my works. I mean, do you hear his patience with them right now? They're holding rocks to kill him. And he's saying, hear my voice, hear my voice. And if you can't hear my voice, then look at the works. If you're deaf here, then watch. Because if you watch long enough, maybe God will give you the ears to hear and believe what I'm saying to you. maybe if you believe the works for now, you'll believe in me soon. What did they do in the face of all his patience? Verse 39, again, they sought to arrest him, but he escaped their hands. …
… Because I said, I am the Son of God. If I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me. But if I do, though you do not believe me, believe the works that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in Him." And therefore they sought again to seize him, but he escaped out of their hand. And he went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there he stayed. And many came to him and said, John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this man were true, and many believed in him there. He who has ears to hear the Word of God, let them hear it." You may be seated. Let's pray. Again, our Father, as we give our attention to Your Word, we pray that unlike those who listened to the teaching of Christ that is recorded here, that we may respond with joy, with thanksgiving, and with faith. …
