… that God's son may be glorified through it. So he's going to use this story for his glory. Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. There's a lot of love. There is a big image within this context of relationship equity and connection. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stared where he was for two more days. What? Okay, this is frustrating me. And then he said to his disciples, let us go back to Judea. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, so he stayed. He loved them, so he stayed. Wait a minute. Because he loved them, he waited? I mean, I've been married for almost 18 years, and if you love me, you move on my time. When I say, can you help me? I count to 60 seconds. If it's 61, I'm picking up that couch, and I am moving it by myself. I might get it wedged in that door that I am taking over, y'all. I know that he loves me and I know that he wants to help me, but sometimes if things aren't moving or progressing on our timeline, we are gonna just take charge. …
… Verse 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus So John evidently really wants us to see I'm talking to you about the love of Jesus Galatians 2.20, you can see with the connection in my own mind. I love to be loved by Jesus. I want to know what it looks like, feels like. And John is telling me this is about the love of Jesus. So verse 2, this woman is the one who anointed Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. That's love between Jesus and her. Then the second statement, verse 3, the one whom you love is ill. And then the third statement, verse 5, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Surely, Jesus is stressing the love of Jesus, or John is stressing the love of Jesus, because he knows that what's about to happen doesn't look like love. And he wants to say, come on now, don't give up on me. Don't react to me in a way that thinks, I don't know what love is. …
… When Jesus heard this, he said, Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this, he said to his disciples, Let us go back to Judea. The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of the world. But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. He said this, and then he told them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I'm going to wake him. So the disciples said to him, Master, if he's asleep, he'll be saved. But Jesus was talking about his death. Well, they thought he meant ordinary sleep. So then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus has died and I'm glad for you that I was not there that you may believe. Let us go to him. …
… death. No, it is for the glory of God so that God's son may be glorified through it. Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister, Mary and Lazarus. He loved them. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days. Everybody say two more days. He stayed there for two more days. And then he said to his disciples, let us go back to Judea. But rabbi, they said a short while ago, the Jews, they try to stone you. And yet you are going back. Jesus answered, are there not 12 hours by daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble for they see this world's light. You know what Jesus is really saying to his crew? He's saying, guys, hold on. You think that I'm afraid of what man can do to me? If I'm in alignment and on assignment from the father, it doesn't matter what any man tries to do to me. I'm under a greater authority. Come on, clap if you're walking in the light and come on, praise him. I'm, I'm good. Cause God's got my back. …
… so that God's son may be glorified through it. Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was. two more days. And then he said to his disciples, let's go back to Judea. So the answer to the question, how can this be that the Lord loves Lazarus and that Lazarus is sick? The answer is found here. Jesus says, this sickness is not going to end in death. Notice when you read carefully, it doesn't say this sickness is not going to include death. It just says it's not going to end in death. And then he tells us it is for the glory of God. If you're taking notes, write this down. God's aim is always God's glory. The sickness is for, you see the word for in the text? For denotes purpose. The reason this sickness is allowed is for a purpose, Jesus says here. And the purpose is the glory of God, that Christ may be glorified through it. …
… that the Son of God may be glorified through it. Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when He heard that He was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was. And then after this, He said to the disciples, let us go to Judea again. The disciples said to Him, Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone you, and are you going there again? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him. These things he said, and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go, that I might wake him. Then his disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he will get well. However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that he was speaking about taking rest in sleep. So then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there that you may believe. Nevertheless, let us go to him. …
… of Lazarus was not unto death, but the purpose of it was to glorify God. Now we're told in verse 5 that Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, so that when He heard that He was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was, which is a jolting statement here in the text, because you would think that when Jesus gets this request in the news of the severity of the illness of Lazarus, and right after John tells us how much he loved Lazarus, you would have expected, as the sisters of Lazarus certainly did, that Jesus would come immediately. But instead, He stayed two more days where He was. And then after that He said to the disciples, let us go to Judea again. And the disciples He said, Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone you, and are you going to go back there? And Jesus said, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. …
