… Listen, we got a really good illustration of this at the Last Supper, John 13. Two of the disciples, John and Judas. By the way, Scripture makes clear they were sitting on either side of Jesus. Judas, the one who would ultimately betray Jesus. John, the disciple that is especially close to Jesus. The gospels make clear, hear me, that Jesus loved them both. In fact, one of the last things Jesus did at the Last Supper was he extended an offer of love directly to Judas. Judas rejects it and goes out to betray Jesus. John stays right next to Jesus, literally leaning his head back on Jesus's chest. The point is the love of Jesus was there for both of them. That umbrella was there, but John leaned into it and Judas put himself outside of it. Listen to me, friend. I can say this to every single one of you in this room. The love of God is for you this weekend. The cross has not moved. …
… and it tells us of the occasion. Before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come, that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. And then it tells us what he did. To begin with, this took place in the city of Jerusalem. From chapter 13 through chapter 19, we have looming large across the page of Scripture, the cross. You see in verse 1 the words, the feast of the Passover. Look at verse 1 with me. Now before the feast of the Passover. Passover to the Jew was like the 4th of July to the American. it represented the history of their liberty it goes all the way back to the days of Moses to the plagues that swept Egypt by the way let me say that that has been one of the most interesting studies I have ever undertaken in the Old Testament studying about the insects and the gnats and the flies and those things that plagued Egypt. It is incredible what they went through in preparation for God's delivering the Israelites. Just incredible. …
Scripture reading comes from John chapter 13 verses 1 through 17. Hear these words. and now before the festival of Passover Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and to go to the father having loved his own who were in the world he loved them to the end now the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him. And so during supper, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, he got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. and then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that he had tied around himself then he came to Simon Peter who said to him Lord are you going to wash my feet and Jesus answered him you do not know now what I am doing but later later you will understand and Peter said to him you will never wash my feet and Jesus answered well unless I wash you you have no share with me Simon Peter said to him well Lord not only then my feet but also my hands and my head and Jesus said to him one who has bathed does not need to wash except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. …
