… Master, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand later. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me. Simon Peter said to him, Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well. Jesus said to him, Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over. So you are clean, but not all. For he knew who would betray him. For this reason, he said, not all of you are clean. So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me teacher and master, and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. …
Scripture reading comes from John chapter 13 verses 1 through 17. Hear these words. and now before the festival of Passover Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and to go to the father having loved his own who were in the world he loved them to the end now the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him. And so during supper, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, he got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. and then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that he had tied around himself then he came to Simon Peter who said to him Lord are you going to wash my feet and Jesus answered him you do not know now what I am doing but later later you will understand and Peter said to him you will never wash my feet and Jesus answered well unless I wash you you have no share with me Simon Peter said to him well Lord not only then my feet but also my hands and my head and Jesus said to him one who has bathed does not need to wash except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. …

Now, you see, the two people there were spiritually alive. They were responsive to spiritual stimuli. why? They suddenly said, yes, that's right. There's Jesus, and he's in charge. And why should we understand all these things? And we can't understand everything. They were spiritually alive, and they were responsive, just like a physical body. When the light hits, you know, you respond to it. When you hear something, you respond to it. A dead body can't respond. Kick it, knock it, put a light on it, you know, put a match under it. Nothing. …
