… know where to get joy. We've misplaced it. And today I want us to see how joy is supposed to play a major part in our life. Go to John chapter 15, verse 11, John chapter 15, verse 11. And this is Jesus talking. And this really is like an anchor scripture for me. And maybe more than an anchor scripture, it could be the goal that we want to reach. We want this goal. And Jesus wants this goal for all of us. Look at it. It says, I have told you these things, Jesus talking, so that you will be filled with my joy. Everybody say my joy. This is Jesus. He has a joy. And I can see some of the disciples because that's who he's talking to being like, he wants us to be filled with his joy. and they start looking like this and then he emphatically says yes look at your joy will overflow somebody say my joy will overflow that's the title of today's message and i want you to realize that that's what god wants for every person in this place he wants joy to overflow in your life he wants you to be joyful or joyful full of joy but if we look at a lot of people's lives, they're not full of joy. They're full of worry. They're full of doubt. They're full of anxiety. And how can we, many people being believers, work on the same level of anxiety and pain and frustration as everybody? And this is what God's saying. I got a key, but you're missing …
… Look at the resources He gives to His disciples. Look at John chapter 15, verse 11. He's about to start talking about the difficulties they're going to go through, and He says this, I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. We have the joy of Christ given to us. Look in chapter 16, verse 33. Look at chapter 16, verse 33. He's just finished talking about the trouble they're going to go through. And he says, I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. I give you my peace, which we just sang about. We have the peace of Christ given to us, which comes from the Father. In this world you'll have trouble, but take heart. I have overcome the world. We have his peace. We have his word. We have his glory. We have His joy. Look back in chapter 14. Listen to what He gives us there. Listen to chapter 14, verse 16. …
He said back in chapter 15, verse 11, These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full. That's what love looks like. my joy in God I want to so live and speak that your joy would be in God and would be full love attempts to share itself to share its joy with others at least with words second then in John 17 Jesus also prays in anticipation of his father's glory and how could he not his whole life has been dedicated to his father's glory he recalls that his life has been devoted to his father's glory three times in john 17 verse 4 i glorified you on earth having accomplished the work that you gave me to do verse 6 i have manifested your name we talked last night about glory and name and honor and praise synonymous ways of talking about god's great end i've manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. And then verse 26, I have made known to them your name, Father, and I will continue to make it known. So Jesus not only did it and glorified his Father, he delighted in it, in his Father and his Father's glory. And then now the final one here in John 17. …
… you keep my commandments you will abide in my love just as I've kept my father's commandments and abide in his love these things I've spoken to you that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. so God says, okay, here's what I want from you. I want you to abide in me. And he says, and you will abide in me if you obey my commands. And then he says, and here's my command, that you love one another as I have loved you. So if God had it his way, he says here's my commandment you want to abide in me here's my commandment i want you to love one another just as i've loved you so if we're serious let's let's just say this was a church here i mean i know it's a building of a church but like we because i don't believe a building is a church um read my book Okay, so if we were a church seriously wanting to please him, God says, here's my command. …
… If you keep my commandments, you'll abide in my love, just as I've kept my father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I've spoken to you that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends. If you do what I command you, no longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing. I've called you friends for all that I've heard from my father. I've made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide so that whatever you ask the father in my name, he may give it to you. Okay. I love this passage. I love it more than I've ever loved it. Just the words that he uses. …
