… But we need the Holy Spirit. John chapter 16, verses 7 to 14 cover it all. But listen to this. I'll touch on the front end and I'll finish it off in a moment. John 16, verse 7 announces, Jesus said, nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away. How could that possibly be good for the disciples that Jesus would leave them? Jesus said, it's better for you that I leave. What could be better than having Jesus right in your midst? Jesus says, the spirit of God. Look at that. For if I do not go away, the helper, and I want to pause right there. Look at the Greek meaning of the word helper. This is a compounded word. Parakletos, parakaleo. Listen, para, you get the word para, parachute, paraglider. That which is alongside you, para. And then kleitos or kleo is the word comforter. The comforter will come alongside you. Jesus, listen, when he was in the flesh, he could only be where he was at. …
… to you. And when he has come, he will convict you of sin and righteousness and of judgment. Now how about verse 13? However, when the spirit of truth has come, he will guide you into all truth for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak and he will tell you all things to come. He will glorify me and he will not take of what is mine and he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Last one, chapter 15, verse 26. When the advocate comes, whom I send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. The Holy Spirit never makes much of himself. The Holy Spirit lives to point you to Jesus. Have you ever had a friend or you ever been in a conversation and the person somehow turns everything and makes it about themselves? You tell a story, they're like, you think that's good. You wait till my story. Oh, that's what you did? You wait to hear what I did. …
… And it'll produce faithfulness, the ability to stand in your life. John 16, 13 says, when the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. Jesus said, I'm the way, the truth, and the life. The Holy Spirit will start working in your life, and the way he's going to produce faithfulness is he will point you back to truth. He will point you back to Jesus. The first point of producing faithfulness in our life is stay in the story. The second one, find faith-filled friends. Everybody say faith-filled. Now, some of you are thinking, Charles, isn't this unfaithfulness? Like, aren't we supposed to have some faithful friends? And my answer is yes, but no. Because some of you got a lot of faithful friends. But they're faithfully negative. They're faithfully keeping back from your promise. You don't need just faithful friends. You need faith-filled friends. …
… about judgment because the prince of this world now stands condemned. He says, I have so much more to say to you, more than you can bear now. But when he, the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. So the Holy Spirit has got many functions. He gives many gifts. But at the forefront, Jesus is saying, he wants to lead people to truth. He wants to lead you out of an algorithmic world, which could be a little bit cloudy and confusing on the issues. And he wants to lead you into not just some of the truth, but guide you into all of the truth. He won't speak on his own. He will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is to come. He will glorify me. So we're getting all this functionality of God, the Holy Spirit. He's not coming to say, wow, all attention on the Holy Spirit, all eyes on the Holy Spirit, everything about the Holy Spirit. He's coming to say the Holy Spirit wants to get all eyes on Jesus, all the attention on Jesus, wants to make everything about Jesus. Because it is for me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the father is mine. That is why I said the spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you. Jesus is recommending the Holy Spirit, the advocate. Why does he call him multiple times in these promises, the advocate? Well, …
… at verse 12. Jesus says, I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come, he will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. The Holy Spirit declares. He clarifies. He makes clear that Christ is real and that he is coming and that his glory is the ultimate concern for the life of the believer. The opposite of these things would be true for those who are still stuck under the banner of sin, who have not received the washing of Christ's blood and of spirit. Sinners around us, and you may remember your own life as a slave to sin, are confused because they don't have that clarifying power of the spirit. They are scared because they don't have access to that comforting power of the spirit. The sinner is callous to the good and beautiful things of the world because the spirit has not enlightened them to what is true and beautiful and serious and important. And of course, sinners are lost because it takes the Holy Spirit to show us day in and day out how to walk and step with our Lord Jesus Christ. …
… The Spirit of truth has come. He will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority. but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will tell you things to come. He will glorify me, Jesus said, for he will take of what is mine and declare it to you. Wow. The work of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God moving in wisdom, all available to you and I, so that you and I in life will not have to make dumb decisions so that we can walk with God in wisdom. The Bible tells us, for example, about us hearing and our dependence upon the Holy Spirit in Revelation chapter 2, verse 7. The Bible says, again, Jesus is speaking. Revelation 2, verse 7. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit, that is the Holy Spirit, says to the churches. God's Spirit is speaking. Every true believer knows when God is speaking. And if you don't know, if you're not sure, God the Holy Spirit, as Jesus said, will speak the word of God. …
… John 16, 13. But when he, the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. Proverbs 16, 9. The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Psalm 73, 24, you guide me with your counsel. And then afterward, you will take me into glory. 1 John 2, 27, as for you, the anointing you receive from him remains in you and you do not need anyone to teach you, but it's his anointing teaches you about all things. And as that anointing is real, not counterfeit, just as it has taught you, remain in him. The fifth observation is that the goal is to stay tethered to the Spirit of God. this Artemis thing has got everybody thinking about space. I know most of you are like, I'm sure Louis is going to preach on Artemis at some point, and I will at some point. But it's got all of us thinking about space, and I was just thinking about this idea of staying tethered to the spirit. …
… and righteousness and judgment. when the spirit of truth comes he will guide you into all truth for he will not speak on his own authority but whatever he hears he will speak and he will declare to you the things that are to come and he will glorify me for he will take what is mine and declare it to you there's so much in these passages that deserves our attention look at the unity of the trinity the son will ask the Father. The Father will send the Spirit. God bless you. There's such a happy cooperation that's at work here. As if to say the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, all three expressions of the same Godhead, are cooperating to be a helper, to come alongside, to be the paraclete. Did you take note of the pronoun, he will lead you. He will teach you. He will guide you. He will convict you. Jesus does not want us to think of the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force, a thing, an it. …
… He said that when he comes, he will, listen, he will guide us into all truth. And that's the 13th verse, but when he, the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He'll not speak on his own initiative. He won't talk about himself. Whatever he hears from the Father, from Jesus, he will speak and he will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify me. He will take from me and disclose it to you. He's our guide. For example, more than likely tomorrow, or maybe before this day is over, you're going to need a sense of direction about something. What you should say to this person, what decision you should make. We all need guidance. Well, we have the guide within us. Well, listen, watch this. We have a divine compass within us. We have a divine director within us. He's the Holy Spirit. One of His responsibilities is to guide us into all truth. What's the truth about this situation? …
