… kindness, and he gives everlasting salvation and his ways are everlasting. You see, we think of eternity and we think of a place but we should think of a person. John 17 3 said this is eternal life that you may know me. That is what eternity is and God has put eternity or himself as it were in the heart of every man. Romans 1 confirms this Ecclesiastes truth verses 18 and 19. It says for For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness because they suppress it. Because what may be known of God is manifest, clearly revealed. Why? Because God has shown it to them. The idea of suppressing is to hold down physically. That God has revealed himself. The Bible makes the case between Ecclesiastes 3 verse 11 and Romans 1, 18 and 19. It makes the case that there is no such thing as an ultimate atheist. It is someone who might make the claim. …
… it's John 17 chapter 3 John 17 verse 3 I'm going to preach this on Easter Sunday I'm getting excited for John 17 1 to 5 John 17 this is eternal life Jesus says that they may know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent that's eternal life knowing God is the heart of eternal life that's the end he made you to know him he made you to enjoy him that's the end the goal and Jesus adds daringly and Jesus Christ who the father sent knowing Jesus enjoying Jesus Jesus is the goal of our fellowship, the goal of our helping words. Which means you will not know Him like you should. You will not know Him like you can. Without brothers and sisters in this room that God has appointed to be God's means of grace to your life that you might know Jesus and enjoy Him. The other one is the way Paul says it. Philippians chapter 3. Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. …
… God well enough to be able to boast in our knowledge of God, to boast in Him. And then the third verse is some words of Jesus in John 17 verse 3. He says, It's this is eternal life. I think it would be a great test question, wouldn't it, to give a three-by-five card to the congregation on the way out with the question, what is eternal life? I think we might get a frightening number of different answers. But what Jesus says is, this is eternal life, to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. And knowledge has content. Knowledge has content. And what we want to seek to do as Christians is to fill our minds, terms of Romans 12, 1 and 2, to have the truth of the gospel, the doctrines of the Bible, saturate our thinking so that we are able to praise God for who He is. And as we learn how to do that, we learn more and more the blessings of the eternal life which is knowing God in Jesus Christ. …
… so they couldn't specifically mention Christ. Islam specifically mentions Christ and says, if you believe in him, you go to hell. Jesus, John 17, 3, and this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God in Jesus Christ whom you have sent. And Revelation, I saw the souls of them beheaded. What group beheads? Right? Another is John 16, the time is coming, whoever kills you will think his offer is God's service. Communists kill millions of people, but they don't believe in a God. What religion kills in thinking they're doing God a service? We love the Muslim person. We just don't love the Sharia teaching. Right? It's not a hardware problem. It's a software problem. Right? We love the person. We just don't like this software running on their brain. Right? And so a friend of mine has a ministry to Muslims. He says this is one verse they cannot argue about. Isaiah 61 that Jesus quoted. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted. There's no concept in all of Islam that Allah wants to heal your broken heart. …
… And this is eternal life. They may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth having accomplished the work you gave me to do. So what's the work that the Father gave the Son to do? To give eternal life. And what's eternal life? This is eternal life, that they may know God and Jesus Christ. Christ, that means Messiah. the one promised to come to know and be known by God through Jesus is life forever so for those of you who are maybe visiting today maybe exploring Christianity this is the message at the center of the Bible that we have all been created by God to know and experience life in close relationship with God. But we have all sinned against God. We've all turned aside from God and his ways to ourselves and our own ways. And our sin separates us from God. And if we die in this state of separation from God, we'll spend eternity in judgment due our sin away from God and his love for us. But the good news of the Bible is that God loves us so much that he has come to us in the person of Jesus. And Jesus has died on a cross to pay the price for all our sin. And he's risen from the grave so that anyone, anywhere, no matter who you are, no matter what you've done, if you will turn from your sin and trust in Jesus, God will forgive you of all your sin and restore you …
… He says to his Father, speaking about us, This is eternal life, that they would know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17, verse 3 the goal of the christian faith is that kind of knowledge not transactional knowledge but interpersonal relational knowledge i was talking with a christian missionary recently years ago he'd served in the philippines and he was leading a bible study with a group of filipino men who were leaders in their villages they were all there that evening inside a small hut discussing what the Bible means when it says that God knows us and wants to be known by us. For example, says the missionary, looking for a way to illustrate this idea of relational knowledge, he gestures toward a wizened elderly man sitting in the back. It's like how Walken here knows his wife, Mother Rufina. The old man, Walken, was a simple, small-time farmer, quiet, unassuming. By Western standards, he had the equivalent of a second-grade education. …
This is eternal life, Jesus says. This is the night before he dies. He's praying out loud that his disciples can hear him. And he says, this is eternal life, that they, my disciples, would know you, Father, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. Oh, this is amazing. This is eternal life. Not just the ability to keep living and do what you want earthly ways. this is the heart, this is the essence of the life he offers, knowing, personally knowing, communing with his Father. And then he's so bold as to say, and Jesus Christ. And me, he says. Here it is, right at the heart. Knowing Jesus is the heart of what Jesus is offering his disciples. Or Philippians 3.8, I hope you know it and love it. Paul says, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. One of my favorite texts of all time. Here's my new one. I was assigned to preach John 10 at our church this past Sunday on the Good Shepherd. …

… That I be not separated from thee eternally. This is life eternal. That they might know thee, the only true God, and him whom thou hast sent. This is life eternal. that they might know thee, the only true God and him whom thou hast sent. Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ. I've separated myself from him. I fled him. I renounced him. I crucified him. May I never again be separated from him. He maintains himself in me only in the ways taught in the gospel. Oh, renunciation, total and sweet. What happened to him? He got access. Big shock. Not the sound of one hand clapping. Not something he couldn't talk about. Not some mystical thing. Not some anti-doctrinal thing. Not getting beyond truth. Not the God of the philosophers. Not the goddess of the wise. Not the abstractions of the philosophers. God of Abraham. God of Isaac. God of Jacob. Fire. That's what Christianity is about. Let's pray. Our great God, We thank you that you're a God who can be known. …
