Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost - August 30, 2026
Rev. Natalie Owens-Pike, 2026-08-30

Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, who are you? Because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish. This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. The disciples are fishing on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias, more commonly known in our biblical text as the Sea of Galilee, a name we might recognize, a name that tells us be on the lookout for a miracle. For here at the Sea of Galilee, Jesus calmed the sea in a storm and walked on water and turned loaves and fishes into food for 5,000. And here the disciples return after Jesus' is death. Return in grief, perhaps, to rhythms they know, a place they were together with Jesus. Simon announces he is going to fish, and the other disciples won't let him go alone. … They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs. He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him a third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted. …

The True Bread From Heaven - Grant Partrick
Grant Partrick, 2025-12-22

… Jesus then took the loaves he gave thanks he distributed those who were seated as much as they wanted and he did the same with the fish and when they had all had enough to eat he said to his disciples gather the pieces that are left over and let nothing be wasted so they gathered them and filled 12 baskets with the pieces of the barley loaves left over by those who had eaten remember Philip's worry? What was it? We don't have enough money to do the bare minimum. Jesus doesn't do the minimum. Jesus's limitations aren't your limitations and his limitations aren't my limitations. He provides enough bread, not for a bite, but for everyone to have their fill. Verse 14, after the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, surely this is the prophet who came, who, who is to come into the world. This is Deuteronomy 18, 15, looming in their minds. Jesus, it says though, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountainside by himself. It's every introvert's favorite verse in the Bible. …
