Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”Most certainly I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted to. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you don’t want to go.”Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.

… Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. This, he said, to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God. And after saying this, he said to him, Follow me. This might sound obvious, but unless you're a trained spy or a ninja, it's easier to hide in the dark than in the daylight. What's a little less obvious is that, as much as this is a good strategy for hide-and-seek, it's just as good for dealing with our sins and spiritual weaknesses. Keep them to ourselves, we think. Don't let anyone else see. Indeed, bringing them into the light is perhaps one of the most difficult parts of the Christian life. Our pride makes us afraid, and so, like the first humans, we hide. …
… freedom and ability to do what we want when we see fit to such a great degree that it crushes us. This is Jesus' warning to Peter in the end of John. Let me read this to you. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger, you dressed yourself and went where you wanted. But when you were old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and lead you out where you do not want to go. This is the core of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. Do you surrender? God is not interested in partial surrender. Are you surrendered to Jesus? All of who you are, every aspect, your freedom, your abilities, what you think is your plan for your life. Have you surrendered? Because God will not bless partial surrender. Let's be real for a moment. We're at a Wednesday night service. I assume many of us in the room tonight love Jesus in the amphitheater. Shout out to the amphitheater. We love you. …
… Jesus tells Peter, truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted. In other words, your life used to be about your plans, but not anymore. And Peter, one day, when you're old, you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. and this he said to show about what kind of death he was to glorify god stretch out your hands is a reference to crucifixion which is the way peter would eventually die for proclaiming jesus tradition tells us he was crucified upside down because he told those who were crucifying him he did not believe he was worthy to die the same way his savior did And after saying this, Jesus said to him, follow me. Please don't miss this. Jesus is not a vitamin. He's not a supplement to add to your life, along with a million other things to make your life better. …
My subject is love steps in. And I am in John 21, verses 15 through 18. I am reading from the New King James Version. And my text says, so when they had eaten, let me give you context. Jesus has been crucified, resurrected, and now he is walking the earth. And as he's walking the earth for 40 days, he does a number of things. Some of them we know, some of them we don't. But in this particular moment, he goes out by the sea while his disciples are fishing. And there's one disciple in particular, Peter, who was out on the boat fishing. Now, for those of you who may still be learning different aspects of the Bible and the story, Peter was like, Peter, I liked Peter as a disciple because he was a gangster, I'll be honest. Peter had a cutting spirit on him and though I've been delivered every now and then I remind myself I've been delivered from the cutting spirit I don't know if that's been anybody else's okay y'all churchy now y'all sitting over here by the deacons and ministers y'all don't want to admit y'all had a cutting spirit a cussing spirit a cutting spirit but God I trust in God he didn't fail me delivered me but we know Peter did because when it was time to to take Jesus Peter cut off one of the soldiers ears it just sometimes that spirit just jump up on you you saved but you forget you saved and he didn't consult with God he let that cutting spirit …
… Jesus said to him feed my sheep truly truly I say to you when you were young you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go and then John says in this parenthesis this he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God. And after saying this, he said to him, follow me. I said we'd linger longer here in verses 15 to 19. So I tell the guys in the preaching class not to do this often. Yeah, I got sub points. All right, we're tracking with three glories of Jesus here at the end. And under point number two, I got four sub points for you about verses 15. I see the guy smiling. All right, yeah. There's not many always's and nevers in preaching. Four ways, mark these four ways that Jesus handles his humbled disciple. …
… when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you, will tie you up, and will carry you where you do not wish. Then this he spoke, signifying by what death he, Simon Peter, would glorify God. He's prophesying to him about his death. Watch this. And when he had spoken this, he said to him, everybody say these words big and bold, follow me. Then Peter, turning, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved, following, who also had leaned on his breast at the supper and said, Lord, who is the one who betrays you? And Peter, seeing him, seeing who? Seeing John, said to Jesus, But Lord, what about him? Jesus said to him, If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow me. When Jesus gives no explanation, just an invitation, follow me. It's after the resurrection, Jesus is meeting with three of his disciples on this appearance, as he often did with these three, Peter, James, and John. …
