… next point. To share the gospel Jesus style we must adapt to the situation. John 14.15. The woman said to Him, Sir give me this water that I may not thirst nor come here to draw. She is being sarcastic. Oh yeah you have water to drink. Oh sir give me this water that you are talking about. Jesus effectively calls her out. He says in John 4.16. Why don't you call your husband to come here. She says, well, I have no husband. Jesus says, that's true. You've had five husbands and you're living with some dude right now. She's like, whoa, how did he know that? She says, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. See, there will come a moment when you're engaging someone, you appeal to their spiritual thirst, but they might ask you a question like, well, look, I'm living with my boyfriend or girlfriend or, you know, I'm doing drugs. Would I have to give that up to follow Jesus? You might say, well, I don't want to say yes. That might turn them away. No, you need to tell them the truth. Yes, you need to give that up to follow Jesus Christ. You see, sin is keeping you from God. Now, I don't start with those issues, but I'm not going to avoid them when I get to them. They need to know that sin separates them from God. But the solution is a relationship with Jesus. The problem is sin. The solution is Jesus. And so Jesus engages her …
… If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The woman said to him, Sir, you do not even have a bucket, and the cistern is deep. Where then can you get us this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks. Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst. The water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come back. The woman answered and said to him, I do not have a husband. …
But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. And the woman said to him, sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water. She only knew about one thirst and wasn't really in touch with the other thirst in her life. And she was getting the message mixed up and thinking, oh, so you're saying you can give me something and I don't have to bring my jug out here at noon again? Now, the noon thing, by the way, was not when you went to get water. Unless you didn't want to be seen by people. the noon hour is when you slipped into the well when it was hot outside not in a morning when a normal person would go to the well this woman was here at a weird time of day because she was in a very difficult season of life and he's about to make that crystal clear when he said okay I'll give you the water but go call your husband and come back. I have no husband. …
… forever. Sir, give me this water. that I may not thirst, and I have to come here to draw. I hate it every time I come here. I feel like I have a scarlet A sewn to my chest. I have to sneak past the eyes of every woman in the village. When I come out here and sit at this place to get my water, I feel so ashamed, so embarrassed, so alone. Thank you. If you have water like this, give it to me, and I'll never have to come back to this well again. So, you said, and go and call your husband and come. She said, I have no husband. She said, that's right, you don't have any husband. You've had five. The one you now have is not your husband. In that you spoke truly. So the woman said, Sir. I perceive that you are a prophet." Brilliant deduction. But why did she have this perception? Because she just met a man that knew her entire life, went right through the facade, and penetrated right to her heart and exposed her sin right then and there. …
