… sarcastic. Oh yeah you have water to drink. Oh sir give me this water that you are talking about. Jesus effectively calls her out. He says in John 4.16. Why don't you call your husband to come here. She says, well, I have no husband. Jesus says, that's true. You've had five husbands and you're living with some dude right now. She's like, whoa, how did he know that? She says, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. See, there will come a moment when you're engaging someone, you appeal to their spiritual thirst, but they might ask you a question like, well, look, I'm living with my boyfriend or girlfriend or, you know, I'm doing drugs. Would I have to give that up to follow Jesus? You might say, well, I don't want to say yes. That might turn them away. No, you need to tell them the truth. Yes, you need to give that up to follow Jesus Christ. You see, sin is keeping you from God. Now, I don't start with those issues, but I'm not going to avoid them when I get to them. They need to know that sin separates them from God. But the solution is a relationship with Jesus. The problem is sin. The solution is Jesus. And so Jesus engages her and tells her what she needs to do. Acts 3.19 says, repent and be converted that your sins may be blotted out and times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord. See, we need to …

THE TRUTH ABOUT LYING

… there. And just as he always does, he went straight to the heart of the issue. Jesus will never be known for chit chat. When you read the words that he says, he went straight to her, go call your husband and come back. Wow, okay. Well, she said, I don't have a husband. And he knew that already. he had the same look that my mom had back in 1990. He knew the answer to that question. He said, that's right. You don't have a husband. And as a matter of fact, you've had five. And the guy that you're living with now is not your husband either. Think about where she is now. Think about this moment. Her deepest secret just got uncovered. How raw is she feeling right now? How exposed is she feeling right now? I think there's probably somebody in this room right now who's thinking, you know what? That ain't for me, Chris. You don't understand how far I've gone. And if I tell the truth, I'm not convinced that the outcome is gonna be any better than where I am right now. …

Episode 123148: 3/8/26 Autobiography: The Middle

… water so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come back. The woman answered and said to him, I do not have a husband. Jesus answered her, You are right in saying I do not have a husband, for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true. The woman said to him, Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but your people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will neither worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand. We worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. …

… and I'll never have to come back to this well again. So, you said, and go and call your husband and come. She said, I have no husband. She said, that's right, you don't have any husband. You've had five. The one you now have is not your husband. In that you spoke truly. So the woman said, Sir. I perceive that you are a prophet." Brilliant deduction. But why did she have this perception? Because she just met a man that knew her entire life, went right through the facade, and penetrated right to her heart and exposed her sin right then and there. You must be some kind of holy man. You must have access to knowledge that normal people don't have. I think she's scared to death. So the best defense she has at this point is to ask a theological question and kind of detour around her sin. Now I told you it was best to read this passage up to verse 26, and I gave it my best shot to finish those 26 verses. …
