… I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ. When he comes, he will tell us everything. Jesus said to her, I am he, the one speaking with you. At that moment, his disciples returned and were amazed that he was talking to a woman. But still no one had said, what are you looking for? Or why are you talking with her? The woman left her water jar and went into town and said to the people, come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Christ? They went out of the town and came to him. Meanwhile, his disciples urged him, Rabbi, eat. But he said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know. So the disciples said to one another, Could someone have brought him something to eat? Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to finish his work. Do you not say, In four months the harvest will be here? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest. The reaper is already receiving payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. For here is the saying is verified that one sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. …

… He is seeking worshipers to seek him in spirit and truth because he is spirit and his worshipers must worship in the spirit and in truth. And the woman said, I know that Messiah called Christ is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. In other words, that was a good answer. But when Messiah comes, he'll break it all down. And then Jesus declared, I, the one speaking to you, I am he. And just then, just in time, as they always did, the disciples returned. And they were surprised to see him talking with a woman. But no one asked, what do you want or why are you talking to her? And then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, this blows my mind. I've been looking at this verse for a long, long, long time. She went back to the town and she engaged all the people. That was not her norm. She's at the well by herself at noon on purpose. Now she's back in the town saying, hey, everybody, come around. …

… And so we're told that He came to this city called Sychar, near that piece of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. When Jacob gave his patriarchal blessing to all of the sons, it is mentioned at the end of the book of Genesis that this parcel of real estate was given to Joseph. And this was a very important piece of land because it contained this ancient site, this well that had been dug by Jacob so many years before. Now keep in mind that when Jesus meets this woman now by Jacob's well, almost 2,000 years have transpired from the time that that well was dug by Jacob, and now this woman is there at that same well still drinking from it 2,000 years later. If that's not exciting, if you've ever been over there to Israel, maybe you've gone to that same site as I have that is right at the base of Mount Gerizim, and that same well is still there today, and the water still flows freely in it. So that well has been meeting the needs of people for 4,000 years. And so after the first 2,000 of those 4,000 years, it was considered something of a sacred site by people who trace their roots back to the Old Testament patriarchs. …

Now the woman says, I know the Messiah is coming. She's gone from you were a prophet to thoughts about the Messiah, and when He comes He will tell us all things. And Jesus says to her, and you notice how reluctant Jesus is to reveal His Messianic vocation throughout the pages of Scripture. adhere to a despised Samaritan, to a despised woman, Jesus reveals Himself. I, who am speaking to you, am He. The disciples come, and they're upset that He's speaking to her. At this point, she leaves. She's so excited, she leaves her water pot. We have no record that she ever even filled it. She just left it there. The whole reason for her being there in the first place was to get that water pot filled with water so she could meet her daily needs and provisions. And now after she meets the Messiah, she leaves the water pot, and she can't wait to get into town to go to that very city where she's an outcast, where she's despised and where she's hated, and she's bubbling up. She goes into the town and she says, you won't believe it. I just met a man out there by the well who told me everything about myself. He's the Messiah. Come and see. …
