… but he needed to go through Samaria. And he came to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Therefore, Jesus was tired from his journey, and he stopped by a well. It was around the sixth hour. That would be 12 o'clock noon. And a woman of Samaria came to draw water. And Jesus said to her, give me a drink. For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you, being a Jew, would ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. And Jesus answered and said to her, if you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. This is a perfect example of how to build a bridge to a person. Now this was an immoral woman, as the story reveals. She had been married and divorced five times since she was living with some guy at the moment. This is a woman who was ostracized from the rest of the community. She would not have been an educated woman. She didn't know what the Bible said. …
… Not only did he go directly through Samaria, which was a place of great political, economic, and social tension, but the Bible says in John 4, verse 6 that when he got there, his disciples went to get lunch, and he sat down on a well and stayed. In the heat of the day, the Bible says at noon or the sixth hour, the way they counted, he stayed in the sun waiting for a woman who would become an evangelist to the area. They saw something of him as he walked, but they saw even more when he stayed. On his way to the temple in John, chapter 5, he stopped by the Pool of Bethesda, and there was a man there who had been stuck there for 38 years. Jesus, who had more important things to do and more important people to see and more important places to go, stayed by this man until this man was able to walk. You can see a lot about the Savior by when he chooses to stay. …
What a sermon in that. And then John chapter 4, verse 6. So it started with Abraham. Isaac tried to dig new wells and find water that gives life. He couldn't find it out there anywhere. So he returned and re-dug his father Abraham's well. So that's two generations. Abraham has died and Isaac tried new stuff, but he came back to that well. And then now we have the third generation, Abraham, Isaac. And the same whale is described 1900 years later when Jesus Christ showed up, God in skin, and went to the whale in Samaria. Watch this. Now Jacob's whale was there. So there's a third generation. I'm preaching on generational whales. I'm preaching on re-digging a whale or digging a whale for your family. A family whale. It was a family whale. Now Jacob's whale was there. Jesus, therefore, being weary from his journey, sat by the well, and a woman from Samaria came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, give me drink. And I'll cut right down to this 11th verse. …
… tired as he was from the journey, He sat down by the well, and it was about noon. Now, if we dug into this story, there's all kind of layers in this story, and the noon hour is one of them. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, will you give me a drink? His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, you are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink for Jews do not associate with Samaritans? And Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God, I just want to underscore this today. What God is wanting for you in 2026 is to give you a gift. Because he's a giver and not a taker. He doesn't need anything that you have. he can do everything that you can do by himself what he wants to do in 2026 is to give you of himself things that are better for you now you you may have to drop some other things by the wayside for that to happen, but primarily he is about giving a gift to you. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, talking about himself, and he would have given you living water. Now, just another thing to footnote here, Jesus is in a zone of ministry where he's trying to keep his identity on the down low. …
… And so we're told that He came to this city called Sychar, near that piece of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. When Jacob gave his patriarchal blessing to all of the sons, it is mentioned at the end of the book of Genesis that this parcel of real estate was given to Joseph. And this was a very important piece of land because it contained this ancient site, this well that had been dug by Jacob so many years before. Now keep in mind that when Jesus meets this woman now by Jacob's well, almost 2,000 years have transpired from the time that that well was dug by Jacob, and now this woman is there at that same well still drinking from it 2,000 years later. If that's not exciting, if you've ever been over there to Israel, maybe you've gone to that same site as I have that is right at the base of Mount Gerizim, and that same well is still there today, and the water still flows freely in it. So that well has been meeting the needs of people for 4,000 years. And so after the first 2,000 of those 4,000 years, it was considered something of a sacred site by people who trace their roots back to the Old Testament patriarchs. …
