… That would be 12 o'clock noon. And a woman of Samaria came to draw water. And Jesus said to her, give me a drink. For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you, being a Jew, would ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. And Jesus answered and said to her, if you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. This is a perfect example of how to build a bridge to a person. Now this was an immoral woman, as the story reveals. She had been married and divorced five times since she was living with some guy at the moment. This is a woman who was ostracized from the rest of the community. She would not have been an educated woman. She didn't know what the Bible said. …
… His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, you are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink for Jews do not associate with Samaritans? And Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God, I just want to underscore this today. What God is wanting for you in 2026 is to give you a gift. Because he's a giver and not a taker. He doesn't need anything that you have. he can do everything that you can do by himself what he wants to do in 2026 is to give you of himself things that are better for you now you you may have to drop some other things by the wayside for that to happen, but primarily he is about giving a gift to you. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, talking about himself, and he would have given you living water. Now, just another thing to footnote here, Jesus is in a zone of ministry where he's trying to keep his identity on the down low. …
She recognized that He's a Jew, and she said, how is it that you're a Jew, that you ask a drink from Me, a Samaritan woman, for Jews have no dealings with Samaritans? I don't know what your translation reads. It's a bad one there, unfortunately, because it's not true that the Jews didn't have any dealings with the Samaritan. They had all kinds of dealings with the Samaritans. In fact, Jesus had sent the disciples into town for a business transaction, a commercial involvement there to buy foodstuffs from them. What they wouldn't do and what they were not allowed to do was to share eating utensils and particularly glasses or cups with the Samaritans because they were considered to be unclean. And this business of their having no dealings is a cue of the lengthy hostility that had gone on with the Samaritans and the Jews, and it had its roots deep in history 400 years before this, this hostility was going on. After the Samaritans had been carried away in captivity in 722 by the Assyrians, and when they returned, they brought with them wives that they had married from the pagans. …
