… John 6, 15, listen to this. When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. What a word for our day. The city that Jesus was in wanted to make Jesus their king. And yet Jesus says, my goal isn't to meet your expectations and do what pleases you. My goal is to do what pleases my father. So I'm gonna say no to a bigger platform, no to a bigger following, no to more popularity, no to being seen because I'm living on the timeline of my father. What would it look like if as a church, we took Jesus up on what he is asking us to do and not buying into anything and everything that might get us more visibility by anyone. and we said, they're seeking me, but I'm seeking God. And right now my seeking God hinders me from saying yes to their seeking me. But it wasn't just Jesus who lived a life like this. …

… With your Bibles open, please join me as I read John's words from chapter 6, verses 1-15. Again, John 6, verses 1-15. And then locate Mark 6, verse 45, and I'll read verses 45-52 as we read the account of Jesus walking on the water from that passage. I'll give you a moment to find both. John 6, verse 1, and then Mark 6, verse 45, where you'll put your finger as we turn back to John 6, 1 to 15. And remember, I'll be reading from the New Living Translation. After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick. Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him. It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration. Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, Where can we buy bread to feed all these people? …

Our Scripture this morning is once again from the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to St. John, and it is published in the bulletin that we are to begin at verse 22, but I'm going to preempt that and begin earlier at verse 15, and then read through verse 40. Therefore, when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone. And when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. And then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. And when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat. And they were afraid. But He said to them, It is I. Do not be afraid. And then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going. …

… when they saw this, they said, this is truly the prophet who was to come in the world. Now, we look to verse 15. Therefore, when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself. is not Jesus the anointed King of kings? Is He not the King of the Jews? Why would He leave when after this miracle these people press on Him because they want to take Him and make Him their King? Here's another reason why I think perhaps John mentioned that this is taking place near the time of the Passover. Remember that at this time in Jewish history, the Passover is not just an exciting and important religious festival, but it is the supreme celebration of national pride during the occupation of Israel. Our celebration of July 4th isn't worthy to be compared with the excitement that the Jews experienced on Passover when they reaffirmed their hope that God would deliver them from the tyranny of Rome. And so while this frenzy is going on, and while the people are desperately looking for somebody that would rescue them from the yoke of Roman tyranny. Now the perfect political candidate appears on the scene. …
