… gives the true bread for the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world implying namely me. God delivered me to this earth to give this earth life. They said to him, Lord, give us this bread. Verse 34, they didn't mean himself. They still meant food. Sounds like the woman at the well. Remember chapter four? Jesus provided her with that beautiful news that he could give her water that would last forever. She said, great, pump it into Syker. And I don't want to keep carrying this dumb jug back and forth from the well, back and forth. Send the water down where I live. That's super. I'd love to have water pumped in. Terrific indoor plumbing. Right at my own doorstep. Jesus said, I'm not referring to that kind of water. They said, keep on giving us this bread. Jesus said, oh, you missed it. I've got bread that isn't even seen by man. It's a whole new life and you still don't see it. …
… the bread from heaven. The miracle isn't the manna and it wasn't Moses. The miracle is my father who gives you the bread, the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Sir, they said, always give us this bread. And then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. And whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. I am the bread of life. Our daily bread is Jesus. And it's making that leap from the thing he taught us to the one who taught us. From the thing that we heard him say to the one who actually is saying it. it's taking the step from the information into a relationship with Jesus he quoted Deuteronomy when tempted in the wilderness and he said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes out of the mouth of the Lord and what he's inviting you to today what he's inviting me into today is not just to get the nugget, but to get Jesus. …
… It is my father who gives the true bread from heaven for the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. The bread that your ancestors ate 1,200 years ago in the wilderness, newsflash, it wasn't Moses that gave you that bread. It was my father that gave you that bread. And today, he's giving you the true bread. The bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Right? Jesus' aim is to tell us who he is and what he came to do. And look what it says. He says, the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven. If you have your scripture, maybe homework for later, go through and circle how many times that phrase appears in this text, John 6, comes down from heaven. The true bread that comes down from heaven. It's in verse 33. It's in verse 38. It's in verse 41. It's in verse 42. It's in verse 50. …
Look at verse 21. It says, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it. Look over in John chapter 6. Look at John chapter 6, verse 33. Jesus feeds over 5,000 people with a little bit of food. As a result, He draws a crowd. Free food? We like this guy. And so they're following Him. Look at what happens in verse 33. He says, the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Not just temporary life, but life, true, eternal life. Verse 35, Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. Never. It is eternal life. Just as a side note, this chapter right here is so huge for showing us God's sovereignty because he talks about some of the things we see in John 17. I want you to hear what Jesus tells the crowd. He's got tons of crowds following him. Look at verse 53. This is what Jesus said. He says, I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up in the last day. Is that a little weird? If you're following Jesus, isn't it good …
… And Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven, for the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. And then they said to him, Lord, give us that bread always. And He said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. We're going to stop at that point, finish the text, God willing, next week. But we'll stop there, and so you may be seated for now. One of the reasons why we take vows, as we did this morning upon joining the church, is because sometimes we have to buttress our promises with sacred commitments because as fallen creatures we are by nature covenant breakers and we are taught by the Word of God that all men are liars. There is no exception to that. So I have to confess to you this morning that when we started this study of John's gospel, I said to you I would not be looking at every verse of this gospel, would be covering the highlights, and I lied. I realized this week that I had intended to pass over this brief passage that records the miracle of Christ of walking on the water. …
