… This is the question that will keep you from missing Jesus. Peter says, Lord, to whom shall we go? Yeah, this is hard. Yeah, this is rough. Yeah, we have no idea what you're talking about. And yeah, we're losing the crowd. And yeah, this isn't going the way we thought it would. But if not you, who? Here's the rest of the statement. Peter says, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Nobody else is talking about that. Nobody else has explained the Father the way that you have. No one has demonstrated the kind of compassion that you have. I mean, you have words of eternal life and we've heard too much. We believe and we've seen too much. We've come to know that you are in fact the Holy One of God. We've seen too much. We've heard too much. So you're stuck with us and we're stuck with you. We're not leaving. but later they would. On the night of his arrest, they're out. …
… You do not want to go away also, do you? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life, and we have believed and come to know that you are the Holy One of God. Between 20 and 25 times every week, we are all doing the same thing at just about the same time. You've already done it once this morning, and before a couple of hours have passed, you will do it again. And believe it or not, before bedtime, you will do it again. For some of the ladies here, it represents the most time-consuming activity of your day. It occurs no less than twice and sometimes as many as four and five times on festive occasions during the passing of one day. What is it? I've seen you whisper to one another and you think you've guessed it. I did this with my son last night and he said, praying. I thought, boy, that is a fantastic answer. It's wrong, but it's a fantastic answer. …
… John 6, 68, when Jesus asked Simon Peter if he also was going to leave him, when some took offense, Peter gave this response, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God. Let's pray. Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank You for the immense privilege that is ours in a church like this. Forgive us, it becomes very commonplace. Especially forgive us when we become complainers. We think somehow that the Word and the Scriptures are dull or lame. us from such blasphemous thoughts, give us such tender hearts that we may always see and savor the blessing that is ours to be given access to the gospel, to know Jesus, to hear from you, to have the oracles of God.
… Simon Peter looks at him and says, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We've come to believe and are convinced that you're the Holy One of God. Peter doesn't understand it, but he accepts it. Why? Because he trusts. That's what faith is. Faith is trusting a person. In this case, it's trusting the second person of the Trinity. Then we have to understand this, that it's trusting, not understanding, that we're all called to. That's what God is asking of us today. trusting, not understanding, which is more than mere belief, right? In the gospel, what does Jesus say today? I'm going to John chapter three. He says, for God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him might not perish, but have eternal life. So he says this belief, but it's really fascinating because later on, Jesus makes a contrast. And the contrast isn't between belief and unbelief. The contrast in John chapter three is between those who believe and those who disobey. …
… And, you know, like Peter plaintively put it, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. He is our one and lasting remedy. He is the one who brings the words of life. He is the one who meets us in the narrow place in order to deliver us out of it and to bring us into the wide place of the eternal home that he has created already for us. that now, even in this life, by faith, we can already enjoy and live into that freedom of the children of God. We're able to approach all of Scripture, New Testament and Old, all of life, big, small, and everything in between, and see that He is there, present, working for us, even if in a hidden way. Well, thank you so much for joining us with this walk through the Old Testament and the sermons from our archives. We love hearing from you and hope to hear from you again soon, Ryan. Thanks, Mike. …
… And then Simon Peter sums it up perfectly. Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You can create food. No. We're not here because you create food. We're here for the words. We're here for the words. You have words of eternal life, as Jesus said back in verse 63. It's the Spirit who gives life, the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you, our spirit and our life." Peter understood exactly what dominated the heart of a true disciple. They wanted the words from the mouth of the Son of God. And Peter adds in verse 69, "'We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy of God." Isaiah's favorite name for God, by the way. The demons knew this, Mark 1, 24, "'I know You, the Holy One of God,' the demons said. We know who You are. You are the Holy One of God. You have come from heaven. Your words have eternal life, and so we believe.'" If you're a false disciple, you reject the words. …
… him anymore. So Jesus said to the twelve, You do not want to go away also, do you? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God. Jesus answered them, Did I myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil? Now He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him." This is a shocking moment in the ministry of our Lord. At the peak of His miracle working, He has a mass defection on the part of disciples. It's laid out very simply in verse 66. Many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. There's a finality in the language there. They left, and they left for good. This passage introduces us to a biblical case, you could say, of Christian deconstruction, people who abandon the faith. …
… And then Jesus said to the twelve, Do you also want to go away? But Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we've come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered them, Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve. You who has ears to hear the word of God, let them hear it. You may be seated. Let us pray. Father, as we turn our attention now to this text that we have read, which indeed contains so many hard sayings, we pray that the Spirit of truth would intercede with our weakness and slowness of heart to understand, and illumine these words, that we may grasp them in their fullness and be changed by them. For we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. …
