… You have words of eternal life, and we have believed and come to know that you are the Holy One of God. Between 20 and 25 times every week, we are all doing the same thing at just about the same time. You've already done it once this morning, and before a couple of hours have passed, you will do it again. And believe it or not, before bedtime, you will do it again. For some of the ladies here, it represents the most time-consuming activity of your day. It occurs no less than twice and sometimes as many as four and five times on festive occasions during the passing of one day. What is it? I've seen you whisper to one another and you think you've guessed it. I did this with my son last night and he said, praying. I thought, boy, that is a fantastic answer. It's wrong, but it's a fantastic answer. It's eating. Psychologists tell us why we do it. Because the basic drive in man and woman is self-preservation. …
… they still reject who he is. Though they recognize that this is the son of the living God, just because someone understands that he's Jesus doesn't mean they're willing to worship and embrace him. Sometimes people reject Jesus because of who Jesus is. He is the son of the living God. And some people are not comfortable that he is the heir to the throne and the king of all the world. So here comes the son. So my question to you today is, will you accept and embrace and be generous to the son or will you reject him? Because Jesus says, I know what you're gonna do to me. You are about to reject me. Ever since I revealed to you who I am, all you've done is reject, reject, reject. And so let me tell you what the landowner, my father's gonna do. My father is gonna take away the land from you. The land will remain, but the tenants are about to change. Who are the new tenants? …
… Peter gave this response, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God. Let's pray. Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank You for the immense privilege that is ours in a church like this. Forgive us, it becomes very commonplace. Especially forgive us when we become complainers. We think somehow that the Word and the Scriptures are dull or lame. us from such blasphemous thoughts, give us such tender hearts that we may always see and savor the blessing that is ours to be given access to the gospel, to know Jesus, to hear from you, to have the oracles of God.
… You notice what the confession is. Jesus of Nazareth, the Holy One of God. They are confessing on one hand his humanity, on the other hand his deity. These demons understood who the second person of the Trinity was. They understood, can I be theological, the hypostatic union. Fully God, fully man. They understood it. They confessed it. Jesus of Nazareth, I know who you are, the Holy One of God. How ironic that they, of all the beings in this section, are the only ones that have the true identity of Jesus. Leaders rejected him, the Jewish leaders. The crowds didn't really know who he was. They were uncertain. And even the disciples were unsure at first, right? When Jesus calmed the Sea of Galilee, they said, Who is this that even the wind and waves obey him? But the demons knew. They had positive ID on him. They knew exactly who he was. They knew who he was because he created them. They knew who he was because he was there when they fell from heaven. …
… You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.' Jesus answered them, Did I myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil? Now he meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he was one of the twelve who was going to betray him." This is a shocking, dramatic moment in the Galilean ministry of Jesus, when not a few, But many, verse 66, verse 60, many said this is too hard to take, this is not something we can believe. Many said that, and in verse 66, many withdrew in a final act of withdrawal, didn't walk with Jesus anymore. What's going on here? Well, we look back at the beginning of chapter 6 and the feeding of the multitude here, and you remember we said these disciples were drawn by the crowd. That's true of the disciples. The massive crowd had drawn these people. And that's kind of how false disciples sometimes get their connection to Christianity. …
Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God. Jesus answered them, Did I myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil? Now He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him." This is a shocking moment in the ministry of our Lord. At the peak of His miracle working, He has a mass defection on the part of disciples. It's laid out very simply in verse 66. Many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. There's a finality in the language there. They left, and they left for good. This passage introduces us to a biblical case, you could say, of Christian deconstruction, people who abandon the faith. It's a very big movement today in our world, understandably. I get it. I know why there are so many defectors from Christianity, so many who are calling themselves ex-evangelicals, or ex-Vs, or Christian deconstructionists, or hashtag empty the pews, or whatever else. The reason there are so many is because there are so many false Christians. …
You have the words of eternal life. Also we've come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered them, Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve. You who has ears to hear the word of God, let them hear it. You may be seated. Let us pray. Father, as we turn our attention now to this text that we have read, which indeed contains so many hard sayings, we pray that the Spirit of truth would intercede with our weakness and slowness of heart to understand, and illumine these words, that we may grasp them in their fullness and be changed by them. For we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. The theologians have a technical term for it. They're called the phrases durioras, or the hard sayings, those sayings that we encounter from time to time in the Scripture which are called hard sayings for two reasons. …
