… I came from the Father. If any man is willing to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from myself. You know that's true today. of you that seek the Lord's will, he delights to tell you his will. That's true across the board. You really want to know the will of God. He is delighted to come to inform you and to confirm his will in your life. He tells you. Jesus said, I came from the Father. And across the page again, you notice verse 33, he says, I'm going to the Father. A little while I am with you, then I will go to him who sent me. That's his ascension. He spoke of his coming. He spoke of his ascension. And then he let them in on a whole new truth that up till this point has never been revealed before in the ministry of Jesus. He told them about the Holy Spirit. Verse 37. On the last day, the great day of the feast, he stood and cried out, saying, If any man is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. …

… Both the living Word and the written Word are absolute truth. John chapter 7, verse 17, Jesus speaking to the Father said, Thy word is truth. That settles it, folks. Jesus said it. But then Jesus himself said in John 14, 6, I am the truth. The living word and the written word. There are those people who try to tell us, well, you know, the Bible, my goodness, that was written by men, so we would expect to find some error in it because it was written by men. It was, men were the human instruments that brought the Bible. Well, do you think that the humanity of Mary made Jesus less than perfect? How did Jesus come? Did he not come? Was he not born of a virgin? How was it possible for a sinful woman? And by the way, let me say this. Mary was a sinner. Does that shock you? that some people have the idea of the immaculate conception. Do you ever hear that, the immaculate conception? …

… Jesus answered them and said, My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. And if anyone wills to do his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on my own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?" The people answered and said, "'You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill you?' Jesus answered and said to them, "'I did one work, and you all marvel. Moses therefore gave you circumcision, not that it is from Moses, but from the Father, and you circumcised a man on the Sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? …

… where He said in verse 16, My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. And if anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine whether it is from God, or whether I speak on my own authority." Now, one of the things that captivates our imagination as we examine the life and ministry of Jesus is indeed His teaching. Not only the content, which is extraordinary enough, but the manner and style of teaching that Jesus used. Even those who don't embrace Christ as the Messiah or as the living Son of God have spoken in admiring terms about His pedagogical skill. Here was a man who was obviously a master teacher. And perhaps the thing for which Jesus is most famous was His mastery of the literary form of the parable. And we're going to talk about that a little bit in a moment. But parables are not as commonplace in Scripture as they may seem to be to us who are so familiar with Jesus' selection of this method of teaching because He uses this method so often. …
