That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

… But what about those who don't believe in him? Listen to what Jesus said to the Pharisees, The righteous followers of God in John 8, 24, I said therefore to you that you shall die in your sins for unless you believe that I am he, you shall die in your sins. Will you notice here, folks, Jesus doesn't offer eternal life to everyone who is sincerely seeking the truth. Jesus doesn't say, whoever follows the God of his or her own choosing has eternal life. No, he says very clearly, only those who believe in me have eternal life. Secondly, beyond what Jesus taught about his uniqueness, let's look at what Jesus taught about his death. You know, there is no way to overemphasize the positive impact that the life and teaching of Jesus have had on this planet, planet earth. I mean, think about all of the things that have been accomplished for good by those who sought to emulate the life and teaching of Jesus. The whole concept of orphanages, caring for abandoned children, that was started by Christians. Or think about the Red Cross. It was started by a Swiss philanthropist who wanted to follow the example of Jesus. The Salvation Army is all built on following the example of Jesus. …
… Either I surrender or I fight. Now, that's the way we find Jesus in this crowd that surrounded him in John chapter 8, verses 12 to 59. He is not around a crowd that had never heard of God. I want to make that clear. He is in a context of religion. As a matter of fact, one of the three great festivals of the year is where he was at the time he spoke the words of John 8, the Feast of Tabernacles. Remember the other time that he brought a sword? He said, Are any of you thirsty? Come to me and drink. They were pouring out the water from that sacred vessel on that sacred altar, and he said, Wait a minute! Let me tell you where real water is. It's in me, and you come to me, you'll never thirst again. Oh, that was a sword. And it started an argument that still hasn't ceased. Now, he comes to this place called the treasury, according to verse 20 of chapter 8. …
He said, I'm going to heaven, and you're not. You will die in your sin, and where I am going you cannot come." He repeated it in verse 24. "'I said to you, you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.'" Three times he says you're going to die in your sins, and you're not going to be able to come to heaven unless you believe in Me. What sends people to hell? Not sin, unforgiven sin, unforgiven sin. We all sin, and we would all end up in hell if our sins were not forgiven. This is the message of Christianity, that God through His loving kindness has designed a way for sinners to be forgiven, and forgiven with such magnanimity that it could be spoken of as if it's removing your sins as far as the east is from the west, or burying them in the depths of the sea, or putting them behind His back, or remembering them no more. …
… and no one laid hands on him, for his hour had not yet come. And then Jesus said to them again, I'm going away, and you will seek me and will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come. So the Jews said, will he kill himself because he says, where I go, you cannot come? And he said to them, you are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins. And then they said to him, Who are you? And Jesus said to them, Just what I've been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he who sent me is true, and I speak to the world those things that I heard from him. They did not understand that he spoke to them of the Father. …
