Sermons on Jonah 1:5

The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Rev. Chris Palmer, 2026-10-12 · Scripture reading

… and such a mighty storm came up upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. And then the sailors were afraid and each cried to his God. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down below to the hold of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. And so the captain came to Jonah and said to him, What are you doing? Sound asleep, get up, call on your God. Perhaps the God will spare us a thought so that we do not perish. And the sailors said to one another, Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us. And so the sailors, they cast lots, and the lots fell on poor old Jonah. And then they said to him, tell us why. Why has this come upon us? What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? …

… bigger? but the Lord hurled a wind on the sea. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his God, and they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep." So, the captain came and said to him, "'What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your God. Perhaps the God will give a thought to us that we may not perish. I'm talking about when God gives a thought to you. I know what he meant when he said it. Maybe if you call on God, he'll remember that we're in this situation. Maybe if you call on your God, he'll do something our gods can't do. One translation says maybe he'll take notice. Another translation says maybe he'll throw a thought our way. Maybe he'll give a thought to us. But the phrase was so rich, man, I couldn't just take it at face value. I realized when he said, Perhaps your God will give a thought to us, and this storm will stop, that your God can give a thought to you that will stop the storm in its tracks. He can do it today, and he can do it right now, and he can do it even though you're in your 30s, and he can do it even while you're in your teens, because what the captain said that was so profound… He said, We need a thought from God. …
