… all right, I did it. Smite them. Strike them down. You know what's crazy? It's crazy what happens. They repent. Watch what Jonah 3.10 says. When God did what? When God saw, sound familiar? Jesus saw when God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways. He relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. He saw, they turned and he forgave. So one guy needs Jesus. One guy is called to preach. both get picked up, carried, and dropped. So let's just call it what it is. Most of us, we don't need to dig holes in roofs. We need to make room in our heart for people that we don't like. There are people you don't like. Let's just be honest. Gossipers. Anybody like a gossiper? No. Self-centered people? No. One-uppers? well then, I will not judge you. Now nineva was the capital of of, of Assyria. It was ripe for judgment. Put this in your heart and in your mind. God had rather show mercy than judgment. God wants to forgive. God wants to show mercy. Have we crossed a deadline in America? Is it too late for our nation? No, absolutely not. Jeremiah chapter 18, VERSES 7 AND 8. Listen to this, God says, at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to pull down and destroy it, if that nation against whom I have pronounced turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto then. God says, if I prophesy judgment, if judgment is there, but if, I, I'm going to bring judgment, but if that nation will turn, if that nation will seek my face, then I will turn from the judgment that I sought to bring to them. It was for this end, to avert the wrath of God, that Daniel sought God “with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes.” This appears from the whole tenor of his prayer, particularly from the solemn conclusion of it: “o Lord, according to all thy righteousness,” or mercies, “let thy anger be turned away from thy holy mountain. — Hear the prayer of thy servant, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate. — o Lord, hear; o Lord, forgive; o Lord, hearken and do, for thine own sake.” (Dan. 9:3, 16.) 8. The fierce anger of God was turned away from them. “God saw their works;” (the fruits of that repentance and faith which he had wrought in them by his Prophet;) “and God repented of the evil that he had said he would do unto them; and he did it not.” (Jonah 3:4.) …
