… is just one. He says, here it is, keep yourselves in the love of God. This is how you keep yourself from stumbling and falling. Keep yourself in the love of God. And I say this is the central command, listen, for a grammatical reason. You see that word keep right there in Greek, that is the only verb in this whole sentence. The other three words there that look to us like verbs, building and praying and waiting, those are actually participles, meaning in Greek there are ways that you apply the one central verb. Building up, praying in, waiting for are three practical ways that you keep yourselves in the love of God but the central command that guides this whole passage, the secret to not falling away is to keep yourself in the love of God. Jude's going to do three things in this conclusion. First he's going to show us how we can keep ourselves in the love of God. We're going to spend the bulk of our time right here. Then number two, he shows us how we can help keep others in the love of God. And then lastly, he is going to conclude the whole book showing us how ultimately we should depend on Jesus to keep us from falling away. Y'all, this book ends in such a beautiful way. One of the most beautiful endings of any New Testament book. He commands us to keep ourselves in the love of God. And in the end, he says, ultimately, you trust Jesus to do it. …
… Give you a hug, and I hate what you've done. What can we do then to keep ourselves in the love of God? He gives us another one of these threes. You see verse 20, build yourselves up in the most holy faith, number one, praying in the Holy Spirit, and then keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. So that's what you can do. You can build yourself up, keep reading your Bible, keep attending the means of grace, having fellowship, keep coming, keep learning, be an ever-impressive spiritual structure so that these wicked people can't sneak into your spiritual house. Build yourselves up, pray in the Spirit, keep praying, and then keep the end in view. You're waiting for the mercy of Christ. Know who you are, know who those false teachers are, and then know who God is who is able to keep you from falling. You notice the Trinitarian shape. Pray in the Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God the Father, and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. …
… It's for your pleasure. it says keep yourself in the love of God looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ under eternal life keep yourself in the love of God three verses later it says now unto him who is able to keep you from stumbling keep yourself in the love of God now to him who is able to keep you, me, from stumbling. There is a connection there. Keep yourself in the love of God. everything that the enemy throws at us, whether it's a job loss, it's any kind of difficulty, a conflict in the home, doesn't matter what it is, somebody who doesn't like you anymore or whatever, all these things that come our way, every single one of them are attempts to disengage us from the love of God. To somehow shut off our awareness of this one who loves us so completely, so fully, so 100% the Father. The enemy works through difficulty, through accusations, through temptation, through all kinds of stuff to disengage us from the love of God. And so here he says, keep yourself in the love of God. Listen to this. The greatest reality in your life, usually I say us, but let's just pretend you and I are in my office, and I'm talking head to head here, nose to nose. … able to separate us from the love of God. This entire story is about this concluding statement. The whole dialogue here is about our awareness and our experience in the love of God. There's a passage here that has been very, very important for me, personal importance, for a lot of years. And it's actually found in the book of Jude. And I want you to hear this verse. it says keep yourself in the love of God looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Keep yourself in the love of God. Three verses later it says now unto him who is able to keep you from stumbling. Keep yourself in the love of God now to him who is able to keep you, me, from stumbling. There is a connection there.
