Sermons on Judges 6:13

“Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

God Taps #4 | “Wonderful Deeds?”
Scott Black Johnston, 2026-10-04 · Scripture reading

… The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to Gideon, The Lord is with you, you mighty warrior. Gideon answered him, But sir, if the Lord is with us, then why has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our ancestors recounted to us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? But now the Lord has cast us off and given us into the hand of Midian. Then the Lord turned to Gideon and said, Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. I hereby commission you. Gideon responded, but sir, how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I'm the least in my family. The Lord said to him, but I will be with you, and you shall strike down the Midianites, every one of them. Then Gideon said to him, If now I've found favor with you, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. …

… he says pardon me my lord he tries to correct God but if the Lord is with us why has all this happened to us I just imagine he's got this like weak wimpy voice I don't know where all the wonders of our ancestors told us about when they said, did the Lord not bring you up out of Egypt? But now the Lord has abandoned us. Look at this. He's speaking like this is fact, that God has abandoned him. Who's standing in front of him? he goes on and on. Pardon me, my Lord. How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Messiah. I'm the least in my family. The Lord answered. Watch this. He doesn't rebuttal. He doesn't correct him. Gideon gives the list of the reasons why he shouldn't be used. And what does he say? I'll be with you. And some of you have memorized and gotten so obsessed with why God can't use you. And here's what I love about God. …

… And then he says this as verse 13 continues. But if the Lord is with us, then why has all this happened to us? Where are all the wonders our ancestors told us about? when they said that the Lord must bring us up out of Egypt, but now the Lord has abandoned us and give us into the hand of Midian. Gideon says, with all due respect, if the Lord is with me, then why does the world look like this? With all due respect, if the Lord is with me, then where is he? Because we're oppressed, we're starving, and we're hiding. not the craziest question in that context, not the biggest stretch for us to find ourselves asking the same questions. The Lord is with me. Week two of Jesus Always, incredible message, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, the Lord is with me. But then I open up my news and I see multiple global conflicts going on at the same time. Like, really? You scroll a little bit further, the Lord is with me, and you see people who are starving or who don't have clean drinking water. Really? Like, this is what it looks like? The Lord is with me. We scroll a little bit further, and we see people groups who are being oppressed or being abused, and they're hiding. Like, really, the Lord is with me. …

… And how many of us know that we're believing God to work within our life in 2026? From the book of Judges, chapter 6, verse 11 through 14, the Bible says, Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth tree, which was in Aphra, which belonged to Joash, while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress in order to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor. Gideon said to him, O my Lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his miracles which our fathers told us about saying, did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? But now the Lord has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. Then the Lord turned to him and said, go in this might of yours and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you? So just a quick breakdown, you see Israel here was facing oppression from the Midianites for seven years. You see the children of Israel were doing evil things in the sight of the Lord and God delivered them into the hands of their enemies. …

… Gideon's response, he says, oh my Lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his miracles which our fathers told us about? Has anybody ever uttered either of those two questions? God, if you're with us, how come all this junk is going on? You know, if this is a nation of blessing and favor, How come the craziness is happening? And what about the other question? Where are all the miracles? Now, I'm thankful. I've seen more miracles than I thought I'd ever get to see in my lifetime. But I still live with the awareness there is so much more. How many of you have asked either of those two questions before? Where are all the miracles? All right. The Lord set you up. He provoked you to have the questions so that you would be better equipped to recognize your call. You are assigned to be the solution. Gideon is asking the question, where's all the miracles? …

Gideon, the Farmer General
Dr. Oswald Hoffmann, 2025-08-23 · Scripture reading

… The angel of the Lord came to a man named Gideon and said to him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valor. The divine irony of this statement was never more clear to anyone than it was to this farmer. All of his brothers had been killed in valiant attempts to throw off the Midianite yoke. Now all that was left was a collection of the crushed and cowardly, of whom he himself was a first-class example. Indeed, at the moment, he was occupied with threshing the little bit of wheat left to him for fear that he would be seen by the Midianites. Gideon was an honest, if not a brave, man. He did not take the Lord too seriously. With peasant bluntness, he set the divine spokesman right. If the Lord be with us, he said, why then has all this befallen us? Where be all these miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt? …

And the Lord looked upon him and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent thee? Here was a man captured by a vision. He had an encounter, I say, with the living God, a challenge from the living God, a call from the living God. My preacher, brother, that's what you need, a vision. We have so many preachers today who, to quote another, are living lives of quiet desperation. They're drawing the breath, drawing the salary, waiting for retirement. Friend, what you need to do is to get a fresh vision of Almighty God. …
