… But the Word of God is always current and it's always relevant. I love what Lamentations 3.23 says. It says, his mercies are new every morning. Can't you think of a time when you've read a scripture you've read before? But suddenly that passage that you're familiar with jumps off the page because it's completely relevant to what you're facing in the moment. You can trust the word of God. Here's another point. The word of God transforms us. The word of God transforms us. Psalm 19, verse seven. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. See, when I read God's word, it transforms the way I think. It transforms me in the way that I live. It changes me. But here's the thing we must remember. It's not enough to just read the Bible. I must do what the Bible says. James 1.22 says, remember, it's a message to obey, not just to listen to. …
Lamentations 3 verses 22 and 23 says the Lord's mercies through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed because his compassions fail not they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. I love the morning. I hate getting up. But I love the morning because Lamentations 3.23 has in a way become what, if you could call it a life verse. Because if I have a rough day, if I have a rough evening, I always look forward to tomorrow morning. Why? Because the Lord's mercies are new every morning. this was an invitation for Ephesus to return to their first love. I love this. Jesus doesn't say, hey, you put me out, so I'm going to lock the door from the outside as I burn the church down. Jesus says, come back. Come back. And so this is their invitation, and this is also your invitation. That if you're sitting here this morning and you recognize, you know what, yeah, I have become like Ephesus. I have allowed it to become all duty. I'm plugging away. I'm serving away. I'm doing all the right things. But the love for Christ has gone. Then let today be the day you come back. Now, before you argue with me and say that this invitation does not apply to you, I want you to notice down in verse 7. Look in verse 7. …
… I love this, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Great is your faithfulness. Great is your faithfulness. My wife, Natalie, has joined the sourdough movement. Woo, wow, we gotta woo, let's go. She's joined the Sourdough cult and... Who knew, you know, bacteria in a jar? I didn't know. But sometimes I'll wake up, and I'll wake up or I'll come home, and I walk in the door, and that smell of fresh bread hits you, and you're like, dang. That's some, I ain't gluten-free today. Let's go. Amen. What's the Bible teaching us here? You woke up to fresh mercy today. You woke up to fresh mercy today. You didn't wake up to last year's mercy. You didn't wake up to yesterday's mercy. You didn't wake up to last week's mercy. You woke up to fresh mercy over your life today. You woke up to a mercy that is carrying you today. You woke up to a mercy that is hugging you and watching over you and guiding you and walking with you every step of the way in view of God's mercy. …
… amen. God is emunah means faithful, even in the darkest, most desperate times of our lives. I can't help but think of Lamentations 3.23. Your mercies are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. And Jeremiah writes Lamentations in a very dark valley of the shadow of death. And we see that same emunah faithfulness throughout the book of Numbers. Thank you so much for writing this book, and hopefully it will inspire many, many Bible studies and devotional reading of Numbers. Thanks for joining us, Dr. Lessing. Thank you, Mike. Lord Jesus, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray.
… for his compassions and mercies never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. And I say to myself, the Lord is my portion. Therefore, I will wait for him. The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. You know what worship looks like in the waiting? just seeking him, just seeking him, just trying to find him in his word, just trying to find him in prayer, just trying to find him in the midst of his church, just trying to find him. If you are constantly seeking and searching after him, if you're constantly looking for him, you will see the goodness of God. He will be your portion forever. I'm going to ask us just to stand to our feet together this morning. I believe in these next few weeks, as we lean into prayer, he's posturing us in this moment to seek him in those moments. …
… For his compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. One more verse. I say to myself, the Lord is my portion. God said somebody needs to change what you say to yourself. You need to change what you say to yourself. shout, The Lord is my portion, therefore I will wait for him. I can tell when the sermon really gets a hold of me, because I start just drawing stuff and scribbling stuff everywhere. Whenever I start pulling out napkins in restaurants and asking the server, would you please bring me a napkin and a pen? The napkin they understand, but the pen, they look at you kind of funny. I've been writing all over the house. Same lies, new loops. Let me draw it for you. I even practiced my drawing, so cheer for me when I do this because I'm insecure about it. …
… therefore i have hope it is of the lord's mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not they are new every morning great is thy faithfulness but but that doesn't last too long because you start walking over in the chapter four and you deal with the with the guttural visceral experience of affliction somebody say affliction chapter one deals with the aftermath of the babylonians destroying jerusalem and now the people have to deal with the chaos and the people have to live in the upheaval in the siege and the famine and the rawness of human suffering according to the wisdom commentary on lamentations bitter memories and theological crises and psychological confusion and rock bottom hopelessness saturate these poetic stanzas in the book of lamentations but by the time you get to lamentations five all you get is an appeal somebody say an appeal you get this prayer from verse one through verse 22 the people have dealt with chaos and their towns have dealt with crashes and their concerns and they're trying to make sense where is god in all of this what is god trying to tell us there are people in leadership that don't care about the least the last the lost or the left out they're they're they're wrestling with their humanity they see death and destruction all around them did you see that plane in philadelphia that looked like a scene out of a movie that looked like war the the kind of images we see in war in another country what do we do how do we maintain joy or resurrect joy …
… However, because of your loving devotion, God, they are not consumed, for your mercies never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. So God, continue to protect my children, even from themselves, as only you can. It's working, family. It's working. I feel it's working through the chat. I can feel it through the chat. Let's try one more for good measure. Thank you, my great God, for you are my rock. Satan is on my heels, chasing me, trying to find me and devour all that is good within me. However, God, you and you alone are the good shepherd, and I shall not want. You maketh me to lie down in green pastures. You leadeth me beside still waters. You restore my soul. You lead me on the path of righteousness for your name's sake. Even though I shall walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. …
… fail not they are new every morning great is thy faithfulness great is thy faithfulness I came by this Sunday to tell you something that I believe God has pressed on my life and I want to press it into yours and it's simply this things are about to get better if you felt that automatically just if you know that you believe things are about to get better beloved when I shared with my preaching pastoring friends the desire to preach from Lamentations they challenged me I said that's an awful strange book to preach from on a day of celebration because Lamentations is exactly what its name says it is it is a story of sorrow it is a song of lament it's one of those books that an author said that if you weren't depressed before you read it you sure will be by the time you get to the end lamentations is Jeremiah putting pen to paper to describe how sorrowful he is as he watches the Babylonian occupation destruction and exile of citizens from Jerusalem. …
… 22 of Lamentations chapter 3. The Lord's loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. What is the one single principle in Scripture that God will use to absolutely sustain us through every changing, moving season in our life, and that principle is the faithfulness of God. The faithfulness of God is the one single principle that'll see you through every changing season, no matter how deep, no matter how dark, no matter how despairing, no matter how depressing, no matter how hopeless, no matter how helpless, no matter how good things are. There is a single principle that will encourage you through every single one of them. Well, I believe the Bible is very clear about that. So I want us to look at our particular verse here in Lamentations, first of all, and listen to what he says in verse 22. He says, The Lord's loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They're not there sometimes, but never cease, never fail means that it's constant, reliable, unwavering, unfaltering, and unchanging. …
… The Lord's loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. What is the one single principle in Scripture that God will use to absolutely sustain us through every changing, moving season in our life? And that principle is the faithfulness of God. There is a single principle that will encourage you through every single one of them. When you think about the faithfulness of God, it simply means this, that God always does exactly what he says he will do, that he keeps every single one of his promises, that when you think about what he's like and you think about all of his attributes, think about his faithfulness. His faithfulness means that he's constant. He doesn't change, that he is reliable, that he's unwavering, that he's unfailing, that he's trustworthy, that he's steadfast. …
