Scared to Death (Revelation 6:12-17)
John MacArthur, 2024-03-03

… First Thessalonians 5.3 says, they will not escape. Nahum the prophet wrote this, who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the burning of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken up by him. But don't hide in the rocks, and don't pray to the rocks. They're useless. Again, we're back to Hebrews 10. It's a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. What about us? Well, let me close with a comforting truth. Chapter 3, in the letter to the church at Philadelphia, verse 10 of Revelation 3, the Lord gives one of His promises to believers. Because you have kept the word of My perseverance." In other words, because you have been steadfast in keeping My Word. You remember John 8? If you continue in My Word, you're My real what? Disciple. Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I will also keep you from the hour of time testing that hour which is about to come upon the whole world to test those who dwell on the earth." What hour is about to come on the whole world to test those who dwell on the earth? …

… Listen to this. Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. That's an extreme wrath. Just like I don't love like him, I don't get angry like him. I don't have a wrath like that. I get mad, but not like that. See, just like he's able to do all things, just like he loves and shows mercy and forgiveness, like I can't do. Just like he dwells in this unapproachable light, well, I can't do that. In the same way, he has a wrath that I'm just like, man, who can stand before his wrath? That's what the Bible says. Who can put up with that? and that's why Jesus over and over in the New Testament, he says, don't you understand, there's going to come a day of judgment, and he talks about this place of torment where he says the worm will not die. He talks about this outer darkness that people will be thrown into. …

III. Give you some directions suitable to the occasion. I. I am to show you that earthquakes are the works of the Lord, and He only bringeth this destruction upon the earth. Now, that God is himself the Author, and sin the moral cause, of earthquakes, (whatever the natural cause may be,) cannot be denied by any who believe the Scriptures; for these are they which testify of Him, that it is God” which removeth the mountains, and overturneth them in his anger; which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.” (Job 9:5, 6.) “He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.” (Ps. 104:32.) “The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.” (Ps. 97:5.) “The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt. Who can stand before his indignation, and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.” (Nahum 1:5, 6.) Earthquakes are set forth by the inspired writers as God’s proper judicial act, or the punishment of sin: Sin is the cause, earthquakes the effect, of his anger. So the Psalmist: “The earth trembled and quaked; the very foundations also of the hills shook, and were removed, because he was wroth” (Ps. 18:7.) So the Prophet Isaiah: “I will punish the world for their evil, — and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible: — Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shalt remove out of her place, in the wrath of the Lord of host, and in the day of his fierce anger.” (Isa. 13:11, 13.) And again. “Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty; and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down,” (in the original, perverteth the face thereof,) “and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. For the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall and not rise again.” (Isa. 24:1, 18–20.) “Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the God of Jacob.” (Ps. 114:7.) “thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise.” (Isa. 29:6.) …
